October 01, 2016: You're invited to take part in National Fossil Day in an effort to promote the exploration, education and protection of the ancient past. Real paleontologists and geologists will be on hand to uncover the secrets fossils reveal about the Earth's past. Activities include an outdoors fossil dig for kids and many fossil exhibits and other related events. October 1, 2016: Take in an afternoon and early evening at the 2nd Annual Beer, Bands and BBQ with local craft beer featuring national and local beers and bbq available for purchase. October 1 - 2, 2016: The 28th Annual Fruitville Grove Pumpkin Fest features hay rides, pony rides, pumpkin painting, face painting, mini train rides, a petting zoo and more. Lots of Halloween decorations for sale, too, from scarecrows to hay bales. October 2, 2016: It's the Old Miakka Hootenanny which celebrates the 102nd anniversary of the old schoolhouse. Live music, food, living history, craft vendors, Civil War re-enactors, home made butter, pottery, tour the old school house, family oriented activities and more including bbq, food and drinks available. October 2, 2016: My October Sarasota Calendar of Events hopes you can enjoy Sarasota's own Ski-A-Rees Water Ski Team and their Sunday afternoon show at 2 p.m. at Ski-A-Ree Stadium. October 5, 2016: The Phillippi Farmhouse Market is back and it features locally grown fruits and vegetables, including local USDA certified organic produce and hydroponics. There will be plants, herbs, hanging baskets, shrubs and cut flowers for sale along with a wide variety of locally baked goods, delicious barbeque, plenty of food and beverage vendors, arts and crafts, soaps and candles and always live music. 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. every Wednesday, October through April. 5500 S. October 6, 2016: Check out Ringling Underground with local and regional live music while up and coming artists showcase their works in the museum courtyard. 8 p.m. - 11 p.m.  Admission: $5 - $10. October 7, 2017: You're invited to ReptiDay 2017, a one-day expo highlihting reptile shows, events, activities and sales. You'll have a chance to see live reptiles from around the world plus the chance to purchase pets and supplies direct from experts. One day only! 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Early Entry at 9:30 am). October 7, 2016: Lakewood Ranch presents Music on Main the first Friday of each month from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m.! Live music, beer, wine and food available. Check out Goodbye Eddie and their Classic Rock sounds. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. October 8, 2016: It's their 11th Annual Plant Sale by the Sarasota County Master Gardeners. Not only will you be able to purchase beautiful plants but Master Gardeners will be on hand to provide gardening tips, answer questions and help with plant selection. October 8, 2016: They call it Dogs at the Point! Always dog friendly, it's a celebration of our four legged friends with pet adoptions, doggie vendors and doggie treats. There will be an Italian Ice truck that will be serving an ice specifically for the dogs called a "Pup Cup!" There will also be delicious items for the human companions as well. 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The cost is regular admission: $12/ Adult, $10/ 65+, $5/ 12-5. October 8, 2016: It's time for a brew! The Beer, Boats and Bacon Fest will feature over 60+ craft beers to sample with the General Admission & VIP Ticket. Throughout the event there will be various bacon bites and samples from local restaurants and caterers plus more food available for purchase from over 15 vendors. October 8, 2016: Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources wraps up their popular 2016 Sizzlin' Summer Concert Series with the blues stylings of Steve Arvey. Cash bar and food concessions will be available. Blankets, lawn chairs and beverages are welcome at the outdoor concerts, but glass is prohibited. 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Free. October 8, 2016: Check out some heavenly bodies during Sidewalk Astronomy courtesy of the local group of Deep Sky Observers. Telescopes will be up and available for public viewing from sunset. - 10 p.m. (weather permitting). City Field, Holmes Beach, located on the soccer field between Marina Drive and Flotilla Drive, just north of the Holmes Beach City Hall, Anna Maria Island.

October 8 - 9, 2016: Check out the best and fastest BMX racers in the world at the BMX Supercross World Cup finals coming to Sarasota over this weekend. It's being billed as "the premier BMX racing series in the world." Racing, featuring 64 men and 32 women, follows the Olympics format and takes place at the Sarasota BMX track, the oldest track in the nation, which has undergone recent renovations to turn it into a state-of-the-art track for amateurs and professionals. October 9, 2016: It's the 7th Annual InStride Grand Barbeque. With special Emcee, Allison Kropff, anchor WTSP 10 News, in addition to delicious BBQ and other fixings at the ranch there will be live music from John Whiteleather Music, 50/50 raffle, face painting for the kids, lots of games and a bounce house, hay ride for everyone and more. All proceeds benefit the InStride Rider Scholarship Fund. Purpose: Partnering with horses, they challenge individuals with special needs to reach their fullest potential. The riders of InStride represent all ages and backgrounds and have varying degrees of cognitive, physical, behavioral, psychological and sensory disabilities. October 13 - 16, 2016: It's the 8th Annual Ringling International Arts Festival. The opening night performance and courtyard celebration will include one opening night performance of your choice at 7 p.m. followed by the Courtyard Celebration along with entertainment, hors d'oeuvres, complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks and a cash bar, dancing and more. October 15, 2016: You're invited to take part in ”The 5k Zombie Run" and "The 5k Color Blast" fun runs. Both runs are family friendly and fun for all ages and participants of all abilities; you can walk, jog, or run at your own pace. The runs are purely for fun and neither run is timed or competitive in any way. October 15 – 16, 2016: The US Australian Football League's (USAFL) national championships comes to The Premier Sports Campus. This is the world's largest Australian football tournament with more than 1,500 players, coaches, supporters and VIPs attending the two-day event. There will be 40 teams competing across 5 Divisions with 30 matches live streamed and on demand replays. Australian Football consists of 18 players toughing it out on an oval-shaped field with no padding. Similar to NFL, physical contact is high with players kicking, handballing and bouncing a ball slightly bigger and more round than an American football trying to score goals (worth 6 points). Dancers, children's activities including pony rides, arts and crafts, games and treasure hunting. Plus world famous Hungarian dishes and desserts.The festival features live concerts with musicians arriving from Hungary who present a variety of music genres from folk music to today's pop. Throughout the day shows, archery demonstrations and dance performances entertain the whole family. You can even participate in a fabulous goulash cooking competition. October 15 -16, 2016: The Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo is hosting the Third Annual Arcadia Fall PRCA Rodeo featuring the baddest bulls and broncs this side of the Mississippi along with all of the timed events everyone knows and loves! Gates open at 11:00 a.m. The Arcadia Rodeo Shootout Gang will perform at 1:00 p.m., immediately followed by the Mutton Bustin'. October 22, 2016: The 3rd Annual ‘Ghost 5K Run’ and Poker Walk is taking place on Old Main Street in Bradenton. The family fun filled Halloween oriented healthy multi event features a 5K competitive run, a 5K chip timed run for Doggies with their owners, a one mile fitness walk, and the Children’s Monster races for children of all ages. In addition there is a Poker Walk for the 5Kers and casual walkers to attend the Main Street local taverns to obtain playing cards with the top hands winning prizes. Registration starts at 3:30 p.m. on Old Main Street for all events. The 5K Doggie Run follows the competitive 5K runner event and features doggie watering holes on the way and awards to the top doggie finishers. Both events finish on Old Main Street to a great after party celebration. Awards are for top finishers and category winners in the 5K run plus boys and girls in the 3-4; 5-6; 7-9; and 10 to 12 age groups. October 23, 2016: It's the 7th Annual Tour de North Port Bicycle Ride. This year's theme is "It's The Green Pumpkin!" It's not a race but four different courses in and around the streets of North Port. There are 15, 35, and 65 mile routes. $40 pre-registration will get you breakfast and a full lunch at the ride's end. And there will also be homemade snacks and desserts. Prizes will be awarded for such categories as "Cutest Costume, Funniest Costume, Spookiest Costume, Most Creative Costume and Best Dog/Owner Look-a-like Costume."
