Sarasota Restaurant: The Old Salty Dog

by Mark
(Manatee County)

The Old Salty Dog was featured on "Man vs Food" in the Sarasota edition of the popular TV show along with Yoder's and Munchies 420 Cafe.

I went to the Salty Dog on City Island for their signature dish: a beer battered deep fried hot dog with choice of toppings.

The fully loaded version of the "Salty Dog" is not recommended for heart patients.

The restaurant is located next to a marina and every seat provides a view of the water.

This Sarasota restaurant is also pet friendly as you can bring your dog to the Old Salty Dog. On my visit there was a couple who had their puppy with them.

Hard to beat a day on the water with hot dogs and puppy's.

Yes – The Old Salty Dog on City Island, Sarasota provides a picturesque setting. Sitting on the deck you can look out over Sarasota Bay and toward the bridge to Longboat Key as well as what’s known as “New Pass,” the channel from Sarasota Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.

Watching the boats come and go, as well as the wildlife in the sky and the occasional waterfowl or dolphin, makes this place a fun, memorable experience.

The Old Salty Dog’s menu also features a steamer and raw bar, seafood entrees as well as burgers, sandwiches and baskets.

The lowest price menu item is clam chowder for $4.99 and the highest priced menu item is the “Captain’s Plate” featuring Filet of Mahi, skewer of shrimp and scallops, blackened or grilled for $24.99 and you can also get New Pass Mussels ranging from a pound and a half for $10.00 to 5 pounds from $32.99.

For those seeking lighter fare they also feature appetizers and salads.

Other interesting menu items include the Salmon BLT for $14.99, a Mango Mahi Wrap for $14.99 and you can get a burger and fries for $8.99. Sandwiches run from $7.99 to $14.99.

Yes, it may be a little pricier, but as “they” say, you’re paying for the whole experience, which includes a million dollar view!

The Old Salty Dog also serves beer and wine.

Without a doubt, you can have a memorable time here.

They are open: Monday - Thursday 11:00 A.M. to 9:30 P.M, Friday - Saturday 11:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. and Sunday 11:00 A.M. to 9:30 P.M.

The Old Salty Dog is on City Island on Ken Thompson Parkway, opposite side of the street from and near Mote Marine Aquarium.)

A little hard to find

I went to the Old Salty Dog after I saw the original episode on the Travel Channel.

The restaurant is not well marked from the road. Luckily City Island is so small that we kept driving around till we found it.

My advice is to just pull into the parking lot of the Marina directly across from Mote Marine. Drive to the back of the Marina and the Salty Dog is on the left.

I took my boyfriend there for his birthday. We had the Blackened grouper sandwich. It was awesome. Once you go blackened you never go back.
