May 5, 2017: There's a street party: "Main Street Live" in honor of Cinco de Mayo! on Historic Old Main Street in Bradenton from 5 p.m. - 12 a.m. with live music by Kettle of Fish throughout the night. The event also features food vendors and arts and crafts. Music ends at 10 p.m. but Old Main Street will remain closed until midnight. Last event of this season. May 5, 2017: It's the first Friday of the month on so that means Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6-9 p.m! Beer, wine and food available. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. Overflow parking is available at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. Lakewood Ranch is off University Parkway east of I-75.
May 6, 2017: Bring your pail, shovel, sunglasses and creativity to Siesta Key Public Beach on for the Annual Siesta Key Sand Sculpture Contest. The contest, traditionally held the first Saturday of May, is held near the Pavilion on the beautiful white sandy Siesta Public Beach. Free and open to all ages of participation, the Siesta Sand Sculpture Contest also awards five cash prizes and is one of our very popular happenings for both locals and visitors on our Escape to Sarasota Calendar of Events. May 6, 2017: Check out what they're calling the "Pickin' Picnic 2017" on downtown Bradenton's Riverwalk Pavilion. You're invite to bring your family and blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics. It's a free community event to showcase regional and local music. The festivities get underway at 1 p.m. Beer aficionados will have the opportunity to sample locally-made craft beer. May 6, 2017: Look up in the sky! Sidewalk Astronomy is being hosted by the Local Group Deep Sky Observers at Celery Fields/SRQ Audubon in Sarasota. Check out the moon and other heavenly bodies for free. Dusk - 10 p.m. (weather permitting). The Celery Fields are located at 6893 Palmer Blvd, Sarasota.Telescopes are set up in the parking lot at the southeast corner of the Celery Fields. (The intersection of Palmer Blvd. and Center Road.). May 6, 2017 - June 11, 2017: It's time to drop your hook, line and sinker for the 87th Annual Sarasota Sports Fishing Anglers Club Tarpon Tournament! Entry fee is $125 and proceeds benefit a local charitable organization. May 7, 2017: It's the 20th year for Corvettes on the Circle taking place on St. Armand’s Circle. Running from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. this show will feature present day models back to the classics of 1953. Over 200 pristine & original Class Corvettes will be on display in the Circle Park. Trophies will be awarded to the top three Corvettes in each generational class as well as Best in Show. May 12 - 13, 2017: The Orioles present “Arts in the Park,” the fourth annual outdoor Pops performed by the Sarasota Orchestra. BEcause of its popularity this year's concert expands to a two night event. The evening promises to be full of hits, vocals by fan favorites and concluding with a spectacular fireworks display. May 13, 2017: It's the Spring Youth Fishing Tournament for ages 1 - 14 at Nokomis Beach. It's just $1 to enter this "catch and release" contest which runs from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. May 21, 2016: It's the 2nd Annual “Fish United Way” tournament benefiting the region’s United Ways and hosted by Florida Power and Light Company. Beginning at 5 a.m., anglers can cast their lines in the 4,000-acre cooling reservoir that serves the FPL Plant. Home to bass, crappies and catfish, the reservoir is a delight for anglers, who pay $350 per boat (includes 3 anglers), to participate in one of the open tournament days. The reservoir is normally closed to the public, but opens four times a year for the fishing tournament which benefits the surrounding communities.
