May 5, 2017: It's the first Friday of the month on so that means Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6 - 9 p.m! Beer, wine and food available. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. May 6, 2017: Bring your pail, shovel, sunglasses and creativity to Siesta Key Public Beach on for the Annual Siesta Key Sand Sculpture Contest. The contest, traditionally held the first Saturday of May, is held near the Pavilion on the beautiful white sandy Siesta Public Beach. Free and open to all ages of participation, the Siesta Sand Sculpture Contest also awards five cash prizes and is one of our very popular happenings for both locals and visitors on our Escape to Sarasota Calendar of Events. May 6, 2017: It's the 20th year for Corvettes on the Circle taking place on St. Armand’s Circle. Running from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. this show will feature present day models back to the classics of 1953. Over 200 pristine & original Class Corvettes will be on display in the Circle Park. Trophies will be awarded to the top three Corvettes in each generational class as well as Best in Show. May 12 - 13, 2017: The City of Venice is partnering with the Venice Gondolier Sun to hold a two-day Hurricane Expo as a public service prior to hurricane season. Speakers from the county, Sheriff's Office, Red Cross and Suncoast Humane Society are also planned, along with ABC-7 meteorologist Bob Harrigan among others through the 2 day event. May 12 - 13, 2017: The Orioles present “Arts in the Park,” the fourth annual Outdoor Pops performed by the Sarasota Orchestra. Because of its popularity this year's concert expands to a two night event. The evening promises to be full of hits, vocals by fan favorites and concluding with a spectacular fireworks display. May 29, 2017: The 2017 Sarasota Memorial Day Parade honoring our fallen brothers and sisters will also pay a special tribute to the Battle of Midway Veterans as the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway will be recognized. The Parade will be led by the City of Sarasota Police Color Guard, the Sarasota Sheriff's Color Guard, and the Sarasota County Fire Department Color Guard, the Florida Fire Service, and Vets on Bikes. The Sarasota Military Academy, Sarasota High School, Riverview High School, Booker High School, and the Sarasota Academy of the Arts will march in the parade along with numerous Veterans groups such as the VFW, Vets on Bikes, National Guard, American Legion, Viet Nam Veterans, SRQ Veterans, DAV, Pearl Harbor Survivors, Ex-POW's, Navy League, and Vet Center. The parade begins at 10 a.m. in downtown Sarasota and marches from Osprey and Main to the Rev. J.D. Hamel Park at Main and Gulf Stream. There Jim D'Angelo, M.D., a nationally recognized Battle of Midway scholar, will be the featured speaker during the Memorial Ceremony at the conclusion of the parade at 11:00 a.m. The Sarasota Academy of the Arts will provide singers for the National Anthem and God Bless America along with a patriotic medley and the Sarasota Military Academy will provide pipers and buglers for the concluding ceremonies.
