The April Sarasota Events Calendar - fun free (or next to nothing) things to do in Sarasota and around the Suncoast.
April 1, 2017: It's the “Fish For United Way” tournament benefiting the region’s United Ways and hosted by Florida Power and Light Company. Anglers can cast their lines in the 4,000-acre cooling reservoir, also known as Lake Parrish, that serves the FPL Plant. Home to bass, crappies and catfish, the reservoir is a delight for anglers, who pay $250 per boat (includes 3 anglers, $50 each additional angler), to participate in one of the open tournament days. The reservoir is normally closed to the public, but opens three times a year for the fishing tournament which benefits the surrounding communities. Top prize: $1,000. Tournament is limited to 50 boats. All of the money raised is shared by United Way of South Sarasota County, United Way Suncoast and United Way of Manatee County. April 1, 2017: It's the 31st Annual Run/walk for the Turtles sponsored by Mote Marine on Siesta Key Public Beach. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Siesta Key Gazebo south of the pavilion. The one-mile fun run or walk begins at 7:30 a.m. The 5-K Run begins at 8 a.m. The entry fee benefits the Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program at Mote Marine Laboratory. 388-4441 xt 357. April 1, 2017: It's Turning Points’ 5th annual “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” with all proceeds going directly to fund programs benefiting the over 2,000 kids who are identified as homeless in Manatee County. Surrounding the 1 Mile Family Fun Awareness Walk will be: a sand blast/castle competition, drawings & raffles, tee shirts (for pre-registered walkers), family pictures, face painting, bounce house, food, music and the post walk party & sunset watch. April 1, 2017: It's the last day of the 3 day event and a bit of a pricier event but if you're a connoisseur of spirits you might enjoy the 5th annual Whiskey Obsession with dozens of master distillers and professional brand ambassadors on hand to serve over 200 whiskies from Scotland, England, Ireland, France, India, Australia, Japan, Canada, and the United States, including many small craft distillers. April 1, 2017: Don’t Miss an Evening Under the Stars at SCF Venice featuring the SCF Jazz Band, Venice Symphony and fireworks hosted by The State College of Florida Foundation, Venice campus. Enjoy dining and listening to music with the night’s theme being “Diamonds are Forever.” The evening also ties into SCF’s 60th Anniversary, with each guest receiving a festive treat to mark the occasion. Bring your friends, coolers and chairs, then sit back and relax while taking in the SCF music students’ performance as you enjoy your picnic. SCF’s Jazz Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by the Venice Symphony. The evening will be capped off with fireworks to Stars and Stripes Forever and the 1812 Overture. A grilling station with light fare, beverages and memorabilia also will be available for purchase. 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. April 1, 2017: Lights, camera, action! Sarasota Film Festival’s Moonlight Movies 2017 season continues with “Finding Dory” at Siesta Beach. SFF offers the free screenings as a way of giving back to the community before and during the festival season. The final screening will be at Lido Beach April 22, 2017. April 1 - 2, 2017: The top college rowing teams in the southeast will take to the waters of Nathan Benderson Park for the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) FIRA Rowing Regatta. This is the 8th year the event will be held in Sarasota County. The park is located off University Parkway and I-75 across from the Target/Best Buy Plaza at 2500 N Honore Ave, Sarasota. April 1 - 9, 2017: It's the Annual Sarasota Film Festival, one of the year's biggest events. It's 10 days of movies, celebrities and parties when Hollywood comes to Sarasota! Hollywood Stars attending the 2017 Film Festival will include Diane Lane, Rory Kennedy, and Aisha Tyler. Actors Stanley Tucci, and Rosanna Arquette, who will take part in the "In Conversation With" series, will also attend the 2017 festival. On the 2016 appearance agenda were actresses and actors: Sophia Loren, Olympia Dukakis, George Hamilton, Mathew Modine, Treat Williams and more. Making appearances in 2015 were actresses Cloris Leachman, Jane Seymour and Blythe Danner. In recent years: making an appearance at the 2013 Film Festival was actress Mariel Hemingway. The 2012 Feature actor and special guest was Frank Langella. 2011's special guest and honoree was the legendary Christopher Plummer, who received the "Cinema Master" Award. April 1 - May 31, 2017: The 14th Annual Embracing Our Differences Exhibit will be on display in Sarasota's Island Park with about 45 billboard-sized works of art. It's an annual outdoor public art exhibition with each art piece each accompanied by an inspirational quote. Students from 204 schools from 115 countries around the world and 48 States submitted artwork or quotes to the juried exhibit. Island Park/Bayfront Park, off of Rt 41, downtown Sarasota. April 2, 2017: Moving to April this year it's the 13th annual Capt John Breuggeman Memorial Grouper Tournament. It's a one-day offshore tournament with prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place plus a trophy for the biggest catch. Plus there's an after tournament barbeque and raffle for a kayak. April 4, 2017: It's "Meet the Marauders” night at Lecom Field's (McKechnie Field) Fan Plaza. The event will include the official announcement of the 2017 Marauders roster. Bradenton is coming off its first ever Florida State League championship in 2016. The Fan Plaza will be buzzing with live music and games, including corn hole, the Marauders inflatable speed pitch, the prize wheel, and a photo booth where fans can pose for pictures with Marauders players. Poet Gianna Russo will offer a poetry writing workshop focused on haiku, tanka and senryu followed by open mic poetry readings. No festival would be complete without games and food. Then attend the 25th Annual Venice Sharks Tooth Festival on the Airport Festival Grounds in Venice, Florida on Airport Avenue. Admission is only $4, kids under 12 are free and there's even free parking at this, one of the spring's most popular fests held at the Venice Airport Festival grounds. Face painting, balloon art, music, pony rides and refreshments are just a few of the other activities to enjoy. A new shiny red firetruck will also be on the scene to see. April 14, 2017: Sarasota Jungle Gardens, a 10-acre zoological and tropical
botanical garden in the heart of Sarasota, will host its annual “Jungle
Trails & Bunny Tails.” The event will feature Easter Egg Hunts with 40,000 candy-filled Easter Eggs (guests bring their own baskets) at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Other exciting activities include a petting zoo with animals new to the Gardens, live bunny interactions and many other fun, family friendly events. April 14, 2017: It's the annual Hernando De Soto Children’s Parade and Party in the Park! The 2017 theme is “Manatee” and will feature floats, schools, families, kids and other organizations decked out to emulate Manatees. Sutton and Lamb Parks in Palmetto will be the site of loads of activities and entertainment for the entire family at the conclusion of the parade including games, bounce houses and a dunk tank. Parade floats are created by local children and their parents or teachers. School, dance and sports teams have entered their submissions for this years’ “Manatee” theme. The Crewe of De Soto, fire trucks, police cars, horses, Marty from the Pittsburgh Pirates and DJ Kitty from the Tampa Bay Rays will attend this year’s event. Multiple trophies and prizes will be given out including $1,000 cash prize for the “Best Use of Theme” category. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at the fairgrounds and ends at Sutton Park, Palmetto.

April 14 - 15, 2017: Check out the 8th Annual Suncoast BBQ & Bluegrass Bash at the Venice Airport Festival Grounds featuring chicken, ribs, pork and beef brisket. There are numerous events open to the public and there will be numerous BBQ teams competing for a $20,000 cook-off contest purse, plus a full afternoon of live bluegrass along with a chili cook off, bake-off, kids park and more.
