For a small fee, children and their parents and siblings can get out on the water with their choice of our equipment, and switch out at their whim — kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddle boards, a pedal pontoon boat, even a 15-foot sailboat with captain (masks required). $10 per person. $5 per adult with accompanying child. May 5, 2023: It's the first Friday of the month on so that means Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6 - 9 p.m! Beer, wine and food available. Memphis Rub Band will fill the air with dynamic blues, R&B and rock n’ roll music and the event will benefit the Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County. The street is lined with food vendors, beer trucks, and sponsor booths, as well as rides and activities for the kids. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. May 5 - 6, 2023: You're invited to join the Sarasota Orchestra for a fan-friendly outdoor Pops concert at Ed Smith Stadium. It's Dancing in the Street: Music of Motown. Hear funky sounds from the height of the Motown era transformed into a symphonic experience with Sarasota Orchestra. The program features smash hits made famous by artists such as Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, The Temptations, and Stevie Wonder. May 6, 2023: It's the 3rd annual fundraiser benefitting CoreSRQ and Satchel’s Last Resort Animal Rescue and Sanctuary- a 5K Run and Fun Walk at beautiful Payne Park, Sarasota! 5k Race will be chip timed and awards will be given to fastest overall female and male runners, and to the top 3 finishers in each age group. Pre- registration includes a t-shirt, finisher medal and a Swag bag with a raffle ticket, entry to the agility course and other goodies. Race day registration will include tickets and swag bags while they last. May 6, 2023: It's the 25th annual Corvettes on the Circle Car Show at the beautiful St. Armand's Circle where you can spend the day viewing over 150 models of an American automotive classic. The show is limited to 175 models. The show will include all Corvette model years from the classic 1953 C1 to the current Corvette Stingray. Trophies will be awarded to the top three Corvettes in each generational class as well as Best in Show and Skyway Corvette Club Favorite. May 6, 2023: This event is no longer. From the Sarsota County Recreation Department: "After 50 years, the Amateur Sand Sculpting Contest has come to a close. Low participation was the main component to our decision. Crystal Classic has an amateur component to the festival in November and we hope some sculptures will come to participate then." Bring your pail, shovel, sunglasses and creativity to Siesta Key Public Beach for the Annual Siesta Key Sand Sculpture Contest. The contest, traditionally held the first Saturday of May, is held near the Pavilion on the beautiful white sandy Siesta Public Beach. Free and open to all ages of participation, the Siesta Sand Sculpture Contest also awards five cash prizes and is one of our very popular happenings for both locals and visitors on our Escape to Sarasota Calendar of Events. May 6, 2023: Three organizations — Venice Historical Resources, Venice Heritage, and the Venice Area Historical Society — will celebrate Venice history with the return of Venice Museums Day. This free event takes place at the Venice Museum, 351 Nassau St S, Venice, FL., Lord-Higel House, 409 Granada Ave, Venice, FL., and the Venice Historic Train Depot, 303 E Venice Ave, Venice, FL. Each organization will offer activities at each site. A free trolley bus will shuttle between sites. Start at any site and use the free shuttle to visit all three. May 6, 2023: It's Manatee's 2nd Annual Taco Fest. The 2022 event featured over 70 of Tri-State Area's Best Taco and other Food Vendors alongside a variety of Specialty Cocktails and entertainment, with an attendance of over 3000. This is a family friendly event featuring a kid zone with a free petting zoo, free jump houses, face painting, free children books from the Manatee Early Learning Coalition and so much more. General Admission to this event includes access to the fair grounds and all on-site entertainment. General admission $10, seniors 65 and over $5, kinds under 13 are free. May 6, 2023: It's SkippyDeeDooDah, the Skip-a-Thon fundraiser that helps to fund the aftercare for survivors of child trafficking, Skipping for those that skipped an innocent childhood. The event is an all-ages family/fitness fun skipping event that is followed by educational awareness delivered by special guest speakers consisting of journalists, survivors, and other advocates who are passionate about eradicating crimes against children. There will be an interactive audience Q&A forum to close the event which is scheduled to end around sundown. SkippyDeeDooDah was created to serve non-profit organizations in the fight to eliminate crimes against children. The 2023 event will serve International Bikers Against Trafficking (BAT) and Slave Free Project. SkippyDeeDooDah is designed to encourage others to take action by speaking up and showing up in the fight to prevent and eliminate child trafficking and child sex exploitation. May 13, 2023: It's the 7th Annual Manatee County Pet Expo Adopt-A-Palooza. Adopt-A-Palooza is the largest one-day adoption event and pet expo event in Manatee County and will feature over 100 adoptable puppies, dogs, cats and kittens from Manatee County Animal Welfare (MCAW), local shelters and animal rescues - all under one roof. May 27, 2023: SRQ VETS is hosting the 8th Annual Memorial Day 5K Hike to honor the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. This event will work to unite the local veterans and civilian communities while raising funds to support SRQ VETS and their efforts to help the local veterans. SRQ VETS is a 100% volunteer veteran-run 501c3 whose mission is to find resources and get them to our local veterans and their families. The hike will start at JD Hamel War Memorial Park then around downtown Sarasota, then down Main St. back to the Park for an afternoon of fun that includes a Cookout, Music, Rock wall Bungee Jumping, Raffles, and more. Every paid participant 21 yrs old and up will receive an event t-shirt, a lunch ticket, 1 beverage ticket. Every paid participant that is 13 to 20 yrs old will receive an event t-shirt, a lunch ticket, 1 N/A drink ticket. May 27, 2023: This year Memorial Day at the Sarasota National Cemetery will honor America's fallen military members in remembrance of their ultimate sacrifice. The Department of Veterans Affairs Sarasota National Cemetery will host a tribute honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service to America. Members of Gold Star families will speak about the service and sacrifice of America’s fallen. Akiel Reyes-Melenzez and Raphael Fabyanic, both graduating cadets from Sarasota Military Academy, will offer remarks about the origins of Memorial Day. Local area musicians Lindsey Graham and Jae Langston will perform patriotic music and their original music scores dedicated to fallen troops. VFW Post 10141 will present colors. May 29, 2023: The Sarasota Memorial Day Parade will host numerous Veterans groups and the Sarasota Military Academy will participate in the parade, about 135 jeeps from the Vets with Jeeps groups. SPD, Sheriff’s Department, and SCFD will lead the parade. Micah Adams will provide bagpipe music. Local Girl Scout units will march in the parade. The Antique Car Association will have numerous cars in the parade. Local elected officials will also march in the parade. In addition, the local H.O.G. Association will have a number of motorcycles in the parade. In addition, the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution will march near the fron of the parade. Our local POW/MIA association with be placed near the beginning of the parade along with the VWF chapters. Local schools will conclude the academic year before the parade, so I do not expect the high school bands or JROTC units to participate in the parade. The 2023 Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Osprey and Main in downtown Sarasota, FL. The Memorial Day Ceremony will be conducted at Chaplain J.D. May 29, 2023: The Annual Venice Area Memorial Day Ceremony will be hosted by the American Legion NO-VEL Post 159 at 10 a.m. at Patriots Park. All veterans organizations in the Venice area are invited to participate. The public is also invited. The event will feature the traditional "laying of the wreaths" by area veterans organizations and auxiliaries including VFW 8118, DAV 1001 and the Marine Corps League. The lineup for this year’s festival will appeal to all audiences, with styles from American electric and soul blues, international blues and swing to everything in between: Noon to 1 p.m. – Joey Gilmore, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Doug Deming & the Jewel Tones and 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Liz Mandeville. May 29, 2023: Memorial Day, at 3:00 pm, there is a National Moment of Remembrance, an annual event that asks Americans, wherever they are at 3:00 pm local time, to pause for one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States. TAPS Across America encourages all who are interested to play TAPS at 3:00 pm.
