May 3 - May 10, 2019: Florida Studio Theatre announces that, in association with the National New Play Network (NNPN), it will produce and host the NNPN Women in Play writing Festival this spring. Part of FST’s Sarasota Festival of New Plays, this three-week Festival will take place throughout April and May, with staged readings of the featured plays in FST’s Keating Theatre May 3 and May 10. The series of staged readings is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. May 4, 2019: Bring your pail, shovel, sunglasses and creativity to Siesta Key Public Beach on for the Annual Siesta Key Sand Sculpture Contest. The contest, traditionally held the first Saturday of May, is held near the Pavilion on the beautiful white sandy Siesta Public Beach. Free and open to all ages of participation, the Siesta Sand Sculpture Contest also awards five cash prizes and is one of our very popular happenings for both locals and visitors on our Escape to Sarasota Calendar of Events. May 4, 2019: It's the 22nd year for Corvettes on the Circle taking place on St. Armand’s Circle. Running from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. this show will feature present day models back to the classics of 1953. Over 200 pristine & original Class Corvettes will be on display in the Circle Park. Trophies will be awarded to the top three Corvettes in each generational class as well as Best in Show. The Orchestra's sixth annual concert at the ballpark is a tribute to the role of women in the creation and performance of popular music. Enjoy classic favorites such as Aretha Franklin's "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman," Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" and Joan Jett's "I Love Rock n' Roll." Guest vocalists also will salute the music of Carole King, Janis Joplin, Minnie Riperton and Heart. May 18, 2019: The hits will keep on coming as Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe partners with the Orioles to present the '70s Soul Party. May 25, 2019: A program honoring America's fallen soldiers and their families will take place in honor of Memorial Day at Sarasota National Cemetery with special guests and dignitaries. May 27, 2019: The Manatee County Veterans’ Council (MCVC) will present the 2019 Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans’ Monument Park. There will also be many Veteran related organizations laying wreaths in honor of those that made the ultimate sacrifice. May 27, 2019: Sarasota Memorial Day Parade: The Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee encourages all Sarasota residents to line Main Street as we recognize the sacrifices, courage, and patriotism demonstrated by Veterans. The parade will honor our fallen brothers and sisters who stood for the United States of America and pledged their lives for our freedom. In addition, Glen Miller will be recognized. Glen Miller left a lucrative career to voluntarily serve our country losing his life in a tragic aircraft crash over the English Channel in 1942. His music lives on today and the Sarasota Jazz Club band will feature Glen Miller's music prior to the Memorial Day Ceremony. Dr. Dennis Spragg, author of "Glenn Miller, Declassified" will be the featured speaker. Parade organizers are hoping to secure a two Air Force jet flyover at 10:00 a.m. as the parade steps off. The parade will consist of Color Guards, local Veteran's organizations, Civic Clubs and others. The Sarasota Military Academy, Sarasota High School, Booker High School, and Riverview High School, Venice Middle School Young Marines will March bands and JROTC units. The parade starts at exactly 10 a.m. at Osprey and Main and conclude at the West end of Main Street. The Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Rev. J.D. May 27, 2019: The Annual Venice Area Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at Patriots Park. American Legion NO-VEL Post will once again be the host. This will be a joint service with all of the Venice Area Veterans organizations (VFW, DAV, Marine Corps League) participating. Each organization and their auxiliaries will be laying wreaths. Guests presenters include Mayor John Holic and County Commissioner Charles Hines. Music will be provide by the Suncoast wind ensemble. Guests are asked to bring a chair. May 27, 2019: Snook Haven along with the Suncoast Blues Society present the 8th Annual Myakka River Blues Festival on Memorial Day. This year's headliner is Bryan Lee, a 2010 Grammy Nominee. The lineup also includes The Kat Crosby Band, The Collaboration Band, Sarasota Slim, Ghost Mountain Revival Band and Ben Prestage. Snook Haven is off the beaten path, near the riverbed in a natural cove with true old Florida ambiance. May 31, 2019: It's the 20th Annual Siesta Key Chamber Golf Tournament at TPC Prestancia's Stadium Course. This private outing presents a unique opportunity for Chamber members and guests to play a round of golf on the private, championship-style course. 7:30 a.m. Registration starts along with complimentary continental breakfast. 9:00 a.m. Shotgun start; tournament commences. May 31 - June 20, 2019: Join the Florida Artist Group for the Opening Reception of "The Beauty of Small" on Friday, May 31 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is an exhibit by 84 Florida artists who have achieved national or statewide recognition. On view will be paintings, photography, mixed media and sculptures in a wide variety of styles and techniques. The exhibit continues through June 20.
