May 1, 2020: Canceled. It's the first Friday of the month on so that means Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6 - 9 p.m! Beer, wine and food available. The Midnight Mama band will fill the air with a mix of rock/soul & dance music. The street is lined with food vendors, beer trucks, and sponsor booths, as well as rides and activities for the kids. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. Overflow parking is available at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. Lakewood Ranch is off University Parkway east of I-75.
May 1, 2020: Canceled. Get Funky At The Ringling with CIMAFUNK! It's an After "Season" Party to celebrate the end of the 2019/2020 season and the beginning of Summer with the Afro-Cuban tropical beats of Cimafunk, who is by far the most exciting new face in Cuba's music scene. Named by Billboard as one of "10 Latin Artists to watch in 2019", he has taken every stage by storm. Feel the Afro-Cuban beat and let that Havana heat head right down to your feet for a special dance party in The Ringling's courtyard. May 1 - 10, 2020: The 22nd Annual Sarasota Film Festival will go virtual for the first time ever. A full, detailed lineup of the festival featuring over 80 films is available on their site and the fest will also include an Audience Award competition for films with voting by on-line viewers.
May 2, 2020: Canceled. Bring your pail, shovel, sunglasses and creativity to Siesta Key Public Beach on for the Annual Siesta Key Sand Sculpture Contest. The contest, traditionally held the first Saturday of May, is held near the Pavilion on the beautiful white sandy Siesta Public Beach. Free and open to all ages of participation, the Siesta Sand Sculpture Contest also awards five cash prizes and is one of our very popular happenings for both locals and visitors on our Escape to Sarasota Calendar of Events. May 2, 2020: Postponed to Sept. 19, 2020. It's the 23rdyear for Corvettes on the Circle taking place on St. Armand’s Circle. This show will feature present day models back to the classics of 1953. Over 150 pristine & original Class Corvettes will be on display in the Circle Park. Trophies will be awarded to the top three Corvettes in each generational class as well as Best Interior, Best Engine Bay, Best Paint Finish, Best in Show and Skyway Corvette Club Favorite. May 7, 2020: The Orioles will host a Blood Drive as part of the club’s ongoing efforts to serve and strengthen the community during the current pandemic. All fans who donate blood will receive an Orioles Backpack Cooler, OneBlood T-shirt, and a wellness checkup. In addition to following all FDA guidelines, OneBlood has implemented additional social distancing safety protocols to protect donors and staff. All donors are asked to make an appointment to help with following social distancing guidelines. Walk-in appointments will not be accepted. May 8, 2020: Check out Spooky Stories Ghost Tours at Historic Spanish Point. Enjoy Spooky Stories of Florida's past as you walk our historic houses, ancient mounds, and our pioneer cemetery. There will be two tours each evening. The tours will meet at the white Gazebo on the Historic Spanish Point site and each tour will last approximately 90 minutes and will be roughly a ¾ of a mile walk outdoors with some pathways up and down stairs. May 9, 2020: A “Suncoast at Home” virtual concert fundraiser, featuring several national recording artists and special guest will benefit Suncoast Charities for Children. National recording artists performing include some of the best in country music such as Walker Hayes, Michael Ray, Hudson Moore, and Cody Webb. May 25, 2020: Hear personal Gold Star stories about fallen heroes. Memorial Day at the National Cemetery will be held only virtually and honor America's fallen military members in remembrance of their ultimate sacrifice. With special guests and dignitaries, the ceremonies will be broadcast live here on their Facebook Page at 10 a.m. from Sarasota National Cemetery Patriot's Plaza, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL. (There will be a short ceremony at 8 a.m. for viewers to see the flag being lowered to half-mast and hear Taps sounded.)
May 25, 2020: Hosted by Manasota Veterans and Manatee County Veterans’ Council, there will be a joint county ceremony for Memorial Day due to COVID-19 safety concerns, they will conduct this ceremony via Facebook Live. This event is expected to last approximately 30 minutes which will include the Invocation, National Anthem, Keynote Speaker (Retired Navy Captain, Michael Hartford), Taps, laying of Wreath, closing remarks and benediction. Sarasota Memorial Day Parade: The Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee encourages all Sarasota residents to line Main Street as we recognize the sacrifices, courage, and patriotism demonstrated by Veterans. The parade will honor our fallen brothers and sisters who stood for the United States of America and pledged their lives for our freedom. The parade will consist of Color Guards, local Veteran's organizations, Civic Clubs and others. The Sarasota Military Academy, Sarasota High School, Booker High School, and Riverview High School, Venice Middle School Young Marines will March bands and JROTC units. The parade starts at exactly 10 a.m. at Osprey and Main and conclude at the West end of Main Street. The Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Rev. J.D. May 25, 2020: Canceled. The Annual Venice Area Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at Patriots Park. American Legion NO-VEL Post will once again be the host. This will be a joint service with all of the Venice Area Veterans organizations (VFW, DAV, Marine Corps League) participating. Each organization and their auxiliaries will be laying wreaths. Guests presenters include Mayor John Holic and County Commissioner Charles Hines. Music will be provide by the Suncoast wind ensemble. Guests are asked to bring a chair. This year's lineup includes Randy Stephens and the Groove, Lauren Mitchel, Artur Menezez, L.C. Williams and the Driver, Ruth Wyand and the Tribe of One and Tommy Z!
