May 4, 2018: It's the first Friday of the month on so that means Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6 - 9 p.m! Beer, wine and food available. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. Overflow parking is available at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. Lakewood Ranch is off University Parkway east of I-75.
May 4 - 5, 2018: The City of Venice is partnering with other organizations to hold a Hurricane Expo as a public service prior to hurricane season. Various speakers from the county, Sheriff's Office, Red Cross and Suncoast Humane Society are also planned among others through the event. May 5, 2018: Bring your pail, shovel, sunglasses and creativity to Siesta Key Public Beach on for the Annual Siesta Key Sand Sculpture Contest. The contest, traditionally held the first Saturday of May, is held near the Pavilion on the beautiful white sandy Siesta Public Beach. Free and open to all ages of participation, the Siesta Sand Sculpture Contest also awards five cash prizes and is one of our very popular happenings for both locals and visitors on our Escape to Sarasota Calendar of Events. May 5, 2018: It's the 21st year for Corvettes on the Circle taking place on St. Armand’s Circle. Running from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. this show will feature present day models back to the classics of 1953. Over 200 pristine & original Class Corvettes will be on display in the Circle Park. Trophies will be awarded to the top three Corvettes in each generational class as well as Best in Show. Music will be from such genres and R&B, jazz, rock, reggae and Caribbean sounds. May 11 - 12, 2018: The Orioles present “Outdoor Pops: Field of Dreams,” the 5th annual Outdoor Pops performed by the Sarasota Orchestra. Broadway stars Deedee Magno Hall and Cliffton Hall will headline as the musicians of the Sarasota Orchestra play a wide range of audience favorites from a stage on the outfield grass. May 12, 2018: It's the Youth Fishing Spring Tournament for ages 1 - 14 at Nokomis Beach. Grab your pole and tackle box for this catch-and-release tournament. May 12, 2018 - June 17, 2018: It's time to drop your hook, line and sinker for the 88th Annual Sarasota Sports Fishing Anglers Club Tarpon Tournament! Entry fee is $125 and proceeds benefit a local charitable organization. Important Dates: There is a Kick-off party that will be held on May 9th at White Buffalo Saloon in Sarasota with registration starting at 6:00 p.m. and the party starting at 7:00 p.m. Your $125 entry into the tournament gets you food and fun and a cash bar will be available. May 15 – June 22, 2018: The beauty of watercolor. The diverse styles representing each artists unique vision, along with the high technical quality of each piece, makes the 41st Annual Juried Exhibition of the Southern Watercolor Society a must see show. From a field of over 200 watercolor paintings representing artists from 19 southern states, the juror, John Salminen, an internationally recognized urban landscape painter, selected 94 paintings for inclusion in the exhibit. The Exhibition, will be on display in all three galleries of ArtCenter Manatee. May 25 - 27, 2018: The NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Committee has selected the teams that will compete in the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championships with the University of Central Florida serving as host. The team championship is composed of 22 teams. Eleven conferences were awarded automatic qualification and the remaining 11 slots were filled with at large selections to complete the championship field. Teams qualifying for the championship are required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. For the I Eights, II Eights and Fours, all 22 boats will be seeded into four heats. May 26, 2018: A program honoring America's fallen soldiers and their families will take place in honor of Memorial Day at Sarasota National Cemetery with special guests and dignitaries. Purple Heart recipient David Taylor will be the key note speaker. Taylor is a US Army veteran. Local artists will perform a medley of patriotic music as the lives of fallen troops are honored and remembered. Patriot Plaza has ample seating, however, visitors may bring lawn chairs should they prefer seating with a back. Ceremonies will begin at 10:00 a.m. Free admission. May 26, 2018: It's the Venice Brew Bash 7 with over 60 craft and imported beers. Representatives from the breweries will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. It's the inaugural St. Armand's Seafood & Music Festival taking place in St. Armand's Circle Park featuring seafood prepared fresh on site along with drinks. Enjoy your foodie experience while jamming to live musical performances on stage by some of Florida’s and the region’s top musical talents. Music will be from such genres as R&B, jazz, classical, calypso, reggae and more. May 27, 2018: It's the special "A Tribute to Heroes" Memorial Day Parade on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Sunday evening. The parade will begin promptly at 7 p.m. Local bands and choir groups, drum lines and dance teams, floats, kids decorated bike contest, food, drinks and live entertainment. May 28, 2018: The Manatee County Veterans’ Council (MCVC) will present the 2018 Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans’ Monument Park. The keynote speaker will be Brigadier General Richard Blunt. There will also be many Veteran related organizations laying wreaths in honor of those that made the ultimate sacrifice. Those organizations include; The Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Legion, Elks, VFW, Korean War, Vietnam War, WWII, WWI and the Gulf War era. May 28, 2018: Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee: "Due to the pending serious weather, it has become necessary to cancel the Memorial Day Parade. There will be a group of Veterans marching our flag down Main Street at 10:00 a.m. regardless of the weather. We will double down our efforts for the Veterans Day Parade and make it the biggest and best in Sarasota History. " The 2018 Sarasota Memorial Day Parade's theme is: "All Gave Some. Some Gave All." 130 band members from Blair High School from Omaha, Nebraska will join in the parade and the Sarasota Military Academy will represent local area high schools. The following units will participate in the parade: City of Sarasota Police Color Guard, Sarasota County Sheriff's Color Guard, Sarasota County Fire Department Color Guard, EMS units, Vets on Bikes, American Legion Post 30, VFW Post 3233, DAV Chapters 3 and 97, Vet Center, Vietnam Veterans, Goodwill/USF Veterans, MIA/USF Veterans, Veterans for Common Sense, Sun Coast Retirees, Pear Harbor Survivor Capt. Robert O'Neil, Local Dignitaries, SAR/DAR, Ex-POW's, Woman Navy Veterans, WWII Female Veterans, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Red Cross, MOA group. The Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee encourages all Sarasota residents to line Main Street as we recognize the sacrifices, courage, and patriotism demonstrated by our Viet Nam Veterans. May 28, 2018: Update: They've rented a huge tent and merged both stages under the big top, so the show will go on at Snook Haven. Snook Haven along with the Suncoast Blues Society present the 7th Annual Myakka River Blues Festival on Memorial Day. This year's headliner is The Rusty Wright Band from Michigan. The lineup also includes The Dale Robbins Band from Australia, Harmonica Wizard Dockta D from Baltimore, Sarasota Slim, Nitro Boseman and many more. Snook Haven is off the beaten path, near the riverbed in a natural cove with true old Florida ambiance. Two stages with non-stop music. May 28, 2018: Cancelled due to weather. The Annual Venice Area Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at Patriots Park. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8118 will be sponsoring the ceremony. All the areas Veterans Organizations will be participating. The public is invited to attend. Bring a folding chair if you like. Water will be provided. Ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. Patriots Park is located on U.S. 41, just north of the intersection of U.S. 41 Bypass North and U.S. 41 Business. May 29, 2018: Explore Historic Spanish Point in the moonlight during their Full Moon walking ghost tour. You'll hear stories of intrigue and mystery about Sarasota and Florida history as you visit the historic houses, prehistoric burial mound and pioneer cemetery of Historic Spanish Point.
