October 1, 2022: It's time to clean out the garage and gather discarded household items, appliances, junk and tree trimmings as Sarasota County hosts a free community cleanup in the Gulf Gate from 8 a.m. to noon,. Dumpsters for residential customers will be available at the following location: 7112 Curtis Ave., across from the Gulf Gate Public Library. October 1, 2022: Postponed. It's Sharktoberfest at Mote Marine Aquarium. Raise a glass with Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium during Sharktoberfest, a craft beer festival in the Aquarium after hours. The event will feature more than 15 local and regional breweries that will provide samples of their staple selections alongside unique, seasonal brews. Each guest will receive a commemorative tasting glass for sampling and a branded gift bag. Check out some heavenly bodies during Sidewalk Astronomy courtesy of the local group of Deep Sky Observers as they return with their program for the first time in over 2 years due to the pandemic.Telescopes will be up and available for public viewing starting at 7:15 p.m., and continuing until at least 10:15 p.m. The members of the Local Group will set up their high-quality telescopes in the parking lot at the southeastern corner of Sarasota's Celery Fields Park. The evening's observing highlights will feature close-up details of the waxing crescent Moon as well as a chance to view the two most spectacular gas-giant planets in the Solar System: Jupiter and Saturn! Parking will be available in the large lot just WEST of the Nature Center building. The telescopes will be set up in the parking lot on the east side of the Nature Center. October 5, 2022: It's NBP Rec Day! A great way to get on the water, family-style! Participants will have the opportunity to try stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, canoes, fishing and more. October 7, 2022 - November 24, 2022: For the 5th year in a row the annual Autumn Hay Maze returns to the playground/event garden area at Nathan Benderson Park. Construction will be the morning of Oct. 7. Last year’s maze was about 40’x50’, and hundreds of area youths (and their parents) enjoyed the two-bale-high maze — tall enough for toddlers but short enough for them and their parents, too. The maze will open to the public in the afternoon, after it's finished. October 7, 2022: It's the Hurricane Ian Relief Concert. Sarasota Orchestra and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall are co-presenting a special concert with proceeds to benefit Hurricane Ian recovery efforts. The concert program showcases a broad range of inspiring music, including Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, John Williams’ Summon the Heroes – originally composed for the 1996 Olympics –and the theme from The Incredibles. All ticket proceeds from the concert benefit the Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. October 8, 2022: Manatee Village Historical Park is hosting “Tombstone Tour,” a free, staff-led tour of the historic cemetery. Learn about the history of the cemetery, the meaning of tombstone symbols, and listen to some of the stories of those who were buried there.The 1850 Manatee Burying Ground is the oldest public cemetery in Manatee County. Each staff member will be giving a unique tour and the public will be able to reserve spots in advance. Mourning during the Victorian era was a ritualized and necessary process to effectively grieve loved ones but, like many other aspects, the bloodshed caused by the American Civil War changed how mourning was carried out. From dog tags to embalming, many of the changes forced by the Civil War are still felt today and show how people adapt even in the most devastating circumstances to find a meaning in loss. October 14 - 31, 2022: You're invited “Lights at Spooky Point,” which features an array of fantastic creatures and cute creations designed with lights along an eerily lit path through the woods at the preserve and outdoor museum of Historic Spanish Point. Visitors also will see familiar historic sites like Mary’s Chapel and the Pioneer Graveyard in a mysterious (but not too scary) new light during this event for all ages. There will be a one-way path from the Welcome Center Gazebo through several popular areas on the Historic Spanish Point bathed in the glow of orange, purple, and red lights. Along the way, guests will encounter flying “ghost orchids,” webs with “spider orchids,” giant “bat orchids,” vine-twisted skeletons, plenty of pumpkins, and other surprises. This nighttime walk through the woods will finish at a hay maze before guests return to the gazebo to exit.Selby Gardens will offer two entry times each evening for Lights at Spooky Point: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. A limited number of tickets will be available for each entry time and must be purchased in advance, either through the Selby Gardens website or at the Welcome Center on either campus. Ticket prices are $20 for Selby Gardens members, $25 for non-members, $15 for ages 5 to 17, and free for children 4 and under. Food, beverages, and other items will be sold separately on site. They will be hosting a "Postponed" Great American Cleanup as KSCB has partnered with Sarasota County's Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources and Libraries and Historical Resources departments to offer new activities to enhance the environmental health and beauty of Sarasota County. In addition to traditional litter removal, there are opportunities to help with other special projects including invasive removal and gardening maintenance at various locations and water based litter removal by kayak. All volunteers MUST individually pre-register to participate by submitting a unique registration form. Currently Lido Beach, Siesta Main Beach and Siesta Key Accesses 5-9 are at full capacity and no longer accepting new volunteers. The Chalk Festival will be performing in a limited capacity in downtown Sarasota creating 3-D illusions.
