January 1, 2020: Clancy's Irish Pub in Bradenton sponsors their 12th Annual Shamrock Shiver Challenge with volunteers braving the chilly Gulf of Mexico waters of Bradenton Beach to raise donations for Caring for Children Charities to help disadvantaged children of Manatee & Sarasota Counties. The challenge takes place at noon on Bradenton Beach at Gulf Drive and 12th Street South, Anna Maria Island, FL. January 1 - 2, 2021: More than a million lights shine and twinkle brightly during the Selby Gardens 17th annual "Lights in Bloom" celebration where you can explore and view life-size garden-themed holiday lights that transform the gardens into a tropical wonderland, all in a safe and socially distanced outdoor Gardens-wide experience. January 1 - 3, 2021: Enjoy Asolo Rep's Holiday Concert, "We Need a Little Christmas." The stage will be set up outside and seating will be limited to 200 per show. All tickets are advance sale until 2 hours before each show. No walk-up sales. Actors will perform in 12-foot bubbles and audience seating will be widely spaced out. Masks and temperature checks will be required for audience members. Portable restrooms will be available as audience members will not have access to the building. There will be no concession sales. January 1 - 4, 2021: Check out "A Digital Old-Fashioned Christmas" by Manatee Village Historical Park. Normally, the museum holds an annual event called “An Old Florida Christmas” on site. Due to COVID-19, this year will be different. While the museum will not be having an in-person event, they are excited to offer a different, free digital event called “A Digital Old-Fashioned Christmas.” This special event for 2020 will include a story time, a craft, and a recipe. The public is invited to view “A Digital Old-Fashioned Christmas” from the comfort of their own homes. Those who access the digital event will be able to enjoy the Manatee Village Historical Park version of “The Night Before Christmas” which includes a funny twist. Museum staff will show how to make orange & clove pomanders, an easy Holiday decoration that smells fresh and spicy. February 1 - 28, 2021: The Photoville FENCE makes its third consecutive appearance at Nathan Benderson Park.The public photography project is exhibited year-round in major parks and downtowns across North America. Featuring more than 90 photographers annually, the exhibition brings compelling visual stories into the public realm, and to a wide and diverse audience. As an outdoor exhibition, social distancing is a distinct built-in feature of the show.“The local show also includes a showcase of seven Florida photographers, judged separately from the international show. The Photoville Fence will appear on the upper finish tower parking lot, on both sides of a chain-link fence between the two bridges onto the park’s Regatta Island. January 3, 2020: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with Rodney Rojas - New Profiles in Jazz Ensemble. Highly versatile, Rodney Rojas has played with a wide variety of musical groups and at festivals, on cruise ships, club and studio gigs. He has performed with numerous artists, including Don Rickles and Doc Severinsen among others. He performs with area big bands and small groups. The New Profiles in Jazz Ensemble plays jazz standards, blues, bossas and music from the American Songbook. January 6, 2020: Check out the Jazz Club of Sarasota Monday Night Jazz at the Florida Studio Theatre Cabaret Series with Whitney James and La Lucha Trio. Whitney James doesn’t just sing a tune, she creatively engages it. Her sense of time and pacing make her a consummate musician’s singer, she knows how to work with a band, instead of asking it to merely back her. UPDATE: The Annual Ringling Bridge Run, usually held each year in January was first tentatively moved to March for 2020 in the hopes of being able to continue the run. Unfortunately due to complications, we assume, from the change over at the Sarasota YMCA in 2019, they are not able to hold the Bridge Run in 2020. Stay tuned for next year.
January 12, 2020: It's a celebration of circus history and heritage as The 33rd Annual Circus Ring of Fame induction ceremony takes place in St. Armand's Circle Park. January 18, 2020: Can you carry a tune? The Pittsburgh Pirates will hold National Anthem auditions from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., open to anyone interested in singing The Star Spangled Banner prior to a Pirates Spring Training game in 2020. Prospective singers must feel comfortable performing in front of audiences of 7,000 people or more. Auditions will be conducted a cappella and must be no longer than two minutes in length. There is no pre-registration for auditions. Prospective singers will perform in the order they sign up on the day of auditions. Registration will close at 11:30 a.m. National Anthem auditions will be conducted for vocalists only. Pirates employees will supervise the auditions and determine which performers to invite to fill open spots in the Spring Training schedule. January 18, 2020: All children (up to age 12) are invited to take part in the Buckaroo Bike Rodeo! Presented by People for Trees and the North Port Kiwanis Club, this is the bike rodeo that was originally planned for October 19, 2019 but was cancelled due to inclement weather. A bike rodeo is not a competition between participants but rather allows young riders to test their bike riding skills at various stations such as “ZigZag”, “Stop on a Dime”, and “Figure 8” earning points that can be redeemed for prizes. The top scoring riders will be eligible to enter raffles for one of three free bikes in the age groups of 5-7, 8-9, 10-12. There will also be a Bike Safety Check station and Helmet Fittings/Giveaways provided by the Friends of the Legacy Trail. Children need to bring a helmet, bike, and a parent/guardian. January 18, 2020: The Beer & Burger Throw Down is coming to The Mall at University Town Center for an epic day of beer sampling, burger indulgence, family fun, and live music! The throw down features free beer samples from 12 p.m.- 3 p.m. featuring local craft brewers, and burgers from some of the best local restaurants and food trucks! January 18, 2020: It's St. Armands Circle's 10th annual Taste of St. Armands! Proudly showcasing their outstanding St. Armands Circle restaurants as they share a sampling of some of their delicious recipes. From continental cuisine to seafood, Italian to Irish, Spanish to Cuban and a little taste of Floribian thrown in for good measure. Over 18 restaurants are participating in the beautiful setting of St. Armands Circle Park, along with noteworthy wineries and microbreweries or maybe you’d like to try this year’s Taste of St. Armands specialty drink. If you don't mind a short drive the downtown streets of Tampa host the Annual Gasparilla Festival from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. An expanded Pirate Fest in 2020 will feature stages along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa. The Gasparilla Parade Of Pirates is from 2 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. and begins at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard. It continues along Bayshore Boulevard to Brorein Street, turns east on Brorein Street, then north on Ashley Drive. The parade ends at Cass Street & Ashley Drive. The Pirate Fest will feature stages along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa with live entertainment, pre and post parade, in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park (Ashley and Twiggs), MacDill Park (Ashley and Whiting), The Sail Pavilion at the Tampa Convention Center, and Fergs Tampa (Jefferson and Channelside Drive). Jazz trumpeter Dan Miller spent 11 years as a member of Harry Connick Jr. Orchestra. Dan also toured internationally and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Tom Jones and Woody Herman. Saxophonist Lew Del Gatto was a member of Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Band and played 25 years with the Saturday Night Live Orchestra. Lew has performed with orchestras backing Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli, Tony Bennett and many more. Members $35; non members $39.
