January 1, 2019: Take part in The First Day Hike and Scavenger Hunt at Oscar Scherer State Park. Hidden among six trails will be concealed signs for you to find. Hike the trails, find the signs, and take a photo of each one. Find them all and bring the images to the Nature Center and claim a prize. 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Free. January 1, 2018: Clancy's Irish Pub in Bradenton sponsors their 10th Annual Shiver Challenge with volunteers braving the chilly Gulf of Mexico waters of Bradenton Beach to raise donations for Caring for Children Charities. The challenge takes place at noon on Bradenton Beach at Gulf Drive and Seventh Street South, Anna Maria Island, FL. More info: 941-794-2489.

January 2, 2019: It's a free concert with live music on Wednesday with the Gentlemen of Jazz. Enjoy the tunes from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. These free concerts take place in Centennial Park's Gazebo in downtown Venice, FL.

January 3, 2019: It's your chance to enjoy "Deck the Halls at Ca' d'Zan" on the grounds of the Ringling Museum. January 4, 2019: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with The Dan Miller/Lew DelGatto Quartet. Dan toured internationally and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Tom Jones and Woody Herman. As a member of the Harry Connick Jr. Orchestra, Miller traveled the world, recording numerous albums and TV specials. Lew Del Gatto was a member of Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Band and played 25 years with the Saturday Night Live Orchestra. He has played with bands on many other TV shows and recorded for numerous movie sound tracks. $10 for Sarasota Jazz Club members, $20 for non-members. 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Universalist Church of Sarasota, 3975 Fruitville Rd, Sarasota. January 4, 2019: Dance along to the Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. Beer, wine and food. Check out the fountain area for a balloon twister, face painting and other fun. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. Overflow parking is available at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. January 4 - 6, 2019: Time for a new boat or just dreaming about your first one? Check out the Bradenton Boat Show complete with boats, accessories, fishing equipment and more along with fishing seminars. Adults $5, 12 and under are free. Free parking. January 5, 2019: It's the 6th Annual Health Expo featuring 100 booths of vendors from the Health & Beauty, Supplement, and Natural Grocery industry, plus local businesses and non-profit organizations.  Attendees will have the opportunity to visit booths to test and take home samples, watch live cooking & essential oils demonstrations. Cooking demonstrations are sponsored by BluLiving Magazine working with Chef Mike from 941Organics, a meal delivery service, and Nikki Nagy from Paleo Connection. Kids have a designated area with games & toys, balloon artist and face-painter. This year's event will kick off with speaker Gail Levy, CEO and Founder of H-Factor hydrogen water, and former chair of the White House Millennium Green Council. Levy will discuss water quality, why hydrogen water is beneficial, and cancer research; doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and begins promptly at 9:00. January 5 - 6, 2019: Enjoy the 61st Annual Orchids Expo Show and Sale put on by the Sarasota Orchid Society. "For the Love of Orchids,” is the theme for 2019's celebration and the show will spotlight thousands of award-winning orchids in the displays created by orchid vendors and local orchid societies. Interact with growers, attend seminars, purchase orchids or just enjoy the beauty of orchids! Sat: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sun: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Adults $5, under 8 free. January 5 - 6, 2019: The Venice Antiques Show features over 50 national and regional exhibitors. Featured: Art Glass, Pottery, Fine Art, Jewelry, Asian and  European Antiques, Americana. January 6, 2018: The free movie night series continues with Disney's "Moana" from the Sarasota Film Festival and Nathan Benderson Park. January 11, 2019: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with The Kitt Moran and the Mike Moran Trio.Vocalist Kitt and pianist Mike Moran performed in the top jazz clubs in NYC, Philadelphia and New Jersey including Atlantic City casinos. They perform regularly in Sarasota, Venice and Port Charlotte. January 12, 2019: In shape? Join hundreds of other runners for the Scrub Jay 5K & 10K run at Oscar Scherer State Park. The 5K run starts at 8:00 a.m. The 10K run starts at 8:15 a.m., the  Park opens at 6:30 a.m. Over 600 runners participated last year! January 12, 2019: Check out some heavenly bodies during Sidewalk Astronomy courtesy of the local group of Deep Sky Observers. Telescopes will be up and available for public viewing from sunset. - 10 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. (weather permitting). January 12 - 13, 2019: It's the 12th Annual Coquina Beach "Winter Fest Arts & Crafts Show." On Anna Maria Island, this arts and crafts show takes place right on Gulf Of Mexico Drive. 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily. Featuring artists and crafts people from all over. January 12, 2019: There will be no 2019 Ringling Bridge Run race due to road construction. Another of our fun January (2018) Sarasota Events is The 15th Annual Ringling Bridge Run starting at 7:30 a.m. from the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail. One of the most popular yearly Sarasota events, the run draws thousands each year. Various entry fees. January 13, 2018: Can you carry a tune? The Pittsburgh Pirates will hold National Anthem auditions, open to anyone interested in singing The Star Spangled Banner prior to a Pirates Spring Training game. Prospective singers must feel comfortable performing in front of audiences of 7,000 people or more. Auditions will be conducted a cappella and must be no longer than two minutes in length. Contestants that wish to sing the Canadian National Anthem before the Pirates games against Toronto on Thursday, March 1 or March 22 are welcome to audition using that selection. There is no pre-registration for auditions. Prospective singers will perform in the order they sign up on the day of auditions. Registration will close at noon. National Anthem auditions will be conducted for vocalists only. Pirates employees will supervise the auditions and determine which performers to invite to fill open spots in the Spring Training schedule. 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  LECOM Park, 1611 9th Street W, Bradenton. January 13, 2019: It's a celebration of circus history and heritage as The 32st Annual Circus Ring of Fame induction ceremony takes place in St. Armand's Circle Park. January 13, 2019: A Community-Wide Mental Health Awareness Event, One Thing I Wish You Knew is open to the entire community. This event will highlight the vulnerability of mental health. The program will feature candid narratives from four local community members who will share their personal experience with mental health, followed by a panel with leading mental health professionals and a mental health community resource fair. The event is free; however, RSVP's are requested. January 18, 2019: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with Mary Rademacher Reed w/Eddie Tobin Trio. Mary has performed in numerous local and regional theatres and travels nationwide as a vocalist.  Awarded West Michigan Jazz Society’s Jazz Musician of the Year 2006. Mary is a true entertainer in every sense of the  word, weaving humor, dance and charm to create a warm rapport with her audience. January 19, 2019: Check out the 25th Annual Sarasota Dollhouse Miniatures Festival now called the 2019 Sarasota Fun in the Sun Miniature Show. The show returns from Venice to Sarasota in 2019. January 19, 2019: It's St. Armands Circle's 9th annual Taste of St. Armands!  Proudly showcasing their outstanding St. Armands Circle restaurants as they share a sampling of some of their delicious recipes. From continental cuisine to seafood, Italian to Irish, Spanish to Cuban and a little taste of Floribian thrown in for good measure. Over 17 restaurants are participating in the beautiful setting of St. Armands Circle Park, along with noteworthy wineries and microbreweries or maybe you’d like to try this year’s Taste of St. Armands specialty drink. Musical sounds will fill the air and set the mood for an evening of fine food, libations and perhaps…a little dancing. There will be a Silent Auction and fundraising activities to benefit Satchels Last Resort Animal Shelter/Sanctuary and St. Armands Circle Association. January 19 - 20, 2019: The Venice-Nokomis Rotary's 27th Annual Fine Art & Craft Festival features talented artists and craftspeople. It all takes place at the Venice Airport Festival Grounds. January 20, 2018: You're invited to take part in ”The 5k Zombie Run," family friendly and fun for all ages and participants of all abilities. The choice is yours: Be a Runner (human) and run from the Zombies or be a Zombie and pull the runner's flags as they run through your "Zombie Zone." The runs are purely for fun and neither run is timed or competitive in any way. There will be t-shirts & finisher medals for everyone plus an after race party with music, food, vendors and a family fun atmosphere. Registration dead line and entry fee. January 20, 2019: Get your fingers snappin' and your toes tappin' to the Joy of Jazz live in Centennial Park at the Gazebo brought to you by the Jazz Club of Sarasota and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, featuring Bill Buchman, jazz pianist and an award winning artist. His music has a foundation in everything from New Orleans swing, boogie woogie, blues and Latin jazz. Bring your folding chair or blanket to sit on and enjoy the sounds. January 25, 2019: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with Tom Ellison Quartet. On reeds and vocals, Tom Ellison is one of the area’s more versatile artists. Tom has performed with artists, such as, Tony Bennett, Henry Mancini, Woody Herman, Johnny Mathis and others. He performs with big bands and orchestras on the Gulf coast and area stage productions and concerts at the Asolo and Van Wezel and the Venice Theatre. $10 for Sarasota Jazz Club members, $20 for non-members. 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Universalist Church of Sarasota, 3975 Fruitville Rd, Sarasota. January 25 - 27, 2019: It's Forks and Corks for Foodies and Wine Connoisseurs with winemaker events and upscale dinners to casual tasting and sampling events. The Grand Tasting, January 27, annually takes place at the Ringling Museum Courtyard and sells out fast each year. Various dates, events, costs, times and locations. Enjoy! Click here for more info.

January 26, 2019: Aarrgg! If you don't mind a short drive the downtown streets of Tampa host the Annual Gasparilla Festival from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. An expanded Pirate Fest in 2019 will feature stages along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa. The Gasparilla Parade Of Pirates is from 2 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. and begins at Bay to Bay Boulevard and Bayshore Boulevard. It continues along Bayshore Boulevard to Brorein Street, turns east on Brorein Street, then north on Ashley Drive. The parade ends at Cass Street & Ashley Drive. The Pirate Fest will feature stages along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa with live entertainment, pre and post parade, in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park (Ashley and Twiggs), MacDill Park (Ashley and Whiting), The Sail Pavilion at the Tampa Convention Center, and Fergs Tampa (Jefferson and Channelside Drive). January 26 - 27, 2019: It's the 12th Annual Downtown Venice Craft Festival featuring a blend of contemporary craft, all handmade in the U.S. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. This is one of the very popular fests on my Sarasota Calendar of Events and it takes place on Miami Avenue in downtown Venice, FL. January 26 - 27, 2019: There's a Flea Market Vintage and Collectibles Fair featuring over 60 exhibitors with everything from "A-Z." Usually held on the last weekend in January on St. Armand’s Circle in Circle Park, there are over 175 artists and craftsmen displaying their works. 10 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Free. January 26 - 27, 2019: Billed as the Sarasolo Festival, this 2 weekend event will feature 16 local and international solo performers featuring a variety of performances from improv to musical, story telling to dance, plays, cabaret, stand up and more featuring a selection of some of our best local performers. Deveraux-Kaiser Collector Car Meet

January 27, 2019: Here's a blast from the past for historic and vintage car enthusiasts: More than 1,500 Antique vehicles will be on display at the 50th Annual Deveraux-Kaiser Collector Car Meet. The show is free and features vehicles vintage 1994 and older plus food trucks on site.
