January 1, 2020: Take part in The First Day Hike and Scavenger Hunt at Oscar Scherer State Park. Hidden among six trails will be concealed signs for you to find. Hike the trails, find the signs, and take a photo of each one. Find them all and bring the images to the Nature Center and claim a prize. 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Free. January 1, 2019: Clancy's Irish Pub in Bradenton sponsors their 11th Annual Shamrock Shiver Challenge with volunteers braving the chilly Gulf of Mexico waters of Bradenton Beach to raise donations for Caring for Children Charities. The challenge takes place at noon on Bradenton Beach at Gulf Drive and Seventh Street South, Anna Maria Island, FL. A post plunge party takes place at Clancy's, 6218 Cortez Road. January 1 - 2, 2020: More than a million lights shine and twinkle brightly during the Selby Gardens 16th annual "Lights in Bloom" celebration where you can explore and view life-size garden-themed holiday lights that transform the gardens into a tropical wonderland. The tropical holiday paradise includes nightly visits from Santa and his elves (before Christmas Eve), children’s arts and crafts activities and games, plus live entertainment. Grilled foods will be available for purchase from the Michael’s on East grill including a cash bar. 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. nightly. January 1, 2020 - February 8, 2020: The largest public photo exhibition in North America will return to Sarasota this fall and winter, this time including a showcase of the best from Gulf Coast photographers. “The Fence” will appear on Nathan Benderson Park’s Regatta Island. The exhibit will appear on both sides of a fence between the island’s twin bridges. Participating artists’ work spans the categories of creatures, home, people, streets, nature, food and play. Each photo series is comprised of as many as five images that share a thematic connection or tell a story. January 2, 2020: It's your chance to enjoy "Deck the Halls at Ca' d'Zan" on the grounds of the Ringling Museum. The mansion is all decked out for the holiday season including a 10' tall tree during extended hours. 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Tickets: $15 Free for members and included with "Art After Five" admission. January 3, 2020: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with Rodney Rojas - New Profiles in Jazz Ensemble. Highly versatile, Rodney Rojas has played with a wide variety of musical groups and at festivals, on cruise ships, club and studio gigs. He has performed with numerous artists, including Don Rickles and Doc Severinsen among others. He performs with area big bands and small groups. The New Profiles in Jazz Ensemble plays jazz standards, blues, bossas and music from the American Songbook. January 3, 2020: Dance along to the Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. Beer, wine and food. Check out the fountain area for a balloon twister, face painting and other fun. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. Overflow parking is available at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. January 4, 2020: More than 50 local exhibitors in the health field will be featured at the Health & Wellness Expo at UTC. This health expo will be interactive and valuable to your health! All conveniently gathered under one roof, the exhibitors' focus will be on preventive medicine, the heart & circulatory system and the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition. These exhibitors will share samples, services and information, valuable to everyone and all ages. January 4, 2020: It's the 7th Annual Health Expo featuring 100 booths of vendors from the Health & Beauty, Supplement, and Natural Grocery industry, plus local businesses and non-profit organizations. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit booths to test and take home samples, watch live cooking & essential oils demonstrations. January 4, 2020: Honk horns and explore all sized trucks at Touch a Truck live and in person for kids ages 10 and under! A fun, free family event, enabling kids to touch, sit in and explore a wide range of trucks. January 4, 2020: Check out some heavenly bodies during Sidewalk Astronomy courtesy of the local group of Deep Sky Observers. Telescopes will be up and available for public viewing from sunset. - 10 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. (weather permitting). January 4 - 5, 2020: Enjoy the 62nd Annual Orchids Expo Show and Sale put on by the Sarasota Orchid Society. "Orchids in Paradise,” is the theme for 2020's celebration and the show will spotlight thousands of award-winning orchids in the displays created by orchid vendors and local orchid societies. January 4 - 5, 2020: The Venice Antiques Show features over 50 national and regional exhibitors. Featured: Art Glass, Pottery, Fine Art, Jewelry, Asian and  European Antiques, Americana. January 6, 2020: Check out the Jazz Club of Sarasota Monday Night Jazz at the Florida Studio Theatre Cabaret Series with Whitney James and La Lucha Trio. Whitney James doesn’t just sing a tune, she creatively engages it. Her sense of time and pacing make her a consummate musician’s singer, she knows how to work with a band, instead of asking it to merely back her. Performing with Ms. James will be the La Lucha jazz trio. Members $35; non members $39. Full bar and dinner available, doors open 6:30 for dinner. January 7 - 8, 2020: It's a free concert with live music on Tuesday with the Happy Time Band and Wednesday with the Gentlemen of Jazz. Enjoy the tunes from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. These free concerts take place in Centennial Park's Gazebo in downtown Venice, FL.

January 8, 2020: It’s party time at the Selby library and everyone is invited! It’s not every day that people can participate in the “Eat, Drink, Dance and be Charitable”  The Crystal Ball, a People’s Gala fundraiser. A gastronomic showcase will give attendees the opportunity to sample the best of Sarasota’s restaurants, one bite at a time. A gathering of over 30 of the best restaurants will present their finest foods and feature some of the region's most celebrated chefs. Live music with Kettle of Fish. January 10, 2020: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with the James Suggs Quartet. One of the finest trumpet players in the Bay area, James Suggs, originally from Harrisburg, PA, has music degrees from Youngstown State and University of So. Florida. He has toured and recorded with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and performed with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and many top jazz artists. He has performed his critically acclaimed tributes to Louis Armstrong,  Harry James and Miles Davis. January 11, 2020: In shape? Join hundreds of other runners for the Scrub Jay 5K & 10K run and the State Wide Traveling Scrub Jay Festival at Oscar Scherer State Park. The 5K run starts at 8:10 a.m. The 10K run starts at 8 a.m., the  Park opens at 6:30 a.m. Over 600 runners participated last year! Stick around after the race for the Scrub Jay Festival from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. featuring speakers, guided walks, tram tours, games, live music, prescribed fire demonstrations and other techniques required for maintaining scrub habitat. January 12, 2019: Another of our fun January Sarasota Events is The 15th Annual Ringling Bridge Run starting at 7:30 a.m. from the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail. One of the most popular yearly Sarasota events, the run draws thousands each year. Various entry fees. Sarasota Ring of Fame induction

January 12, 2020: It's a celebration of circus history and heritage as The 33rd Annual Circus Ring of Fame induction ceremony takes place in St. Armand's Circle Park. There (usually) will be a live concert performance of circus music with a 60 piece band prior to the induction ceremony at 2 p.m.. 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Here's more on the ceremonies and the Circus Ring of Fame.

January 12, 2020: The State College of Florida Foundation (SCFF) will host the 18th annual Sundays at Neel entertainment series through  March 22, 2020. The series continues with: Diamonds: Let's Rock Broadway - Dozens of delightful Broadway hits come to life in a rousing performance complete with multiple costume changes. January 12, 2019: Can you carry a tune? The Pittsburgh Pirates will hold National Anthem auditions from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m, open to anyone interested in singing The Star Spangled Banner prior to a Pirates Spring Training game. Prospective singers must feel comfortable performing in front of audiences of 7,000 people or more. Auditions will be conducted a cappella and must be no longer than two minutes in length. Contestants that wish to sing the Canadian National Anthem before the Pirates games against Toronto on February 27 or March 8 are welcome to audition using that selection. There is no pre-registration for auditions. Prospective singers will perform in the order they sign up on the day of auditions. Registration will close at 11:30 a.m. National Anthem auditions will be conducted for vocalists only. January 17, 2020: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two"with Bill Buchman's Art of Jazz. Art of Jazz features top players performing inspiring contemporary jazz, Latin, swing, boogie woogie, blues, New Orleans style and more. Bill says about his music, “Jazz and blues are our forms of art and that’s the level we strive for. Our music is all about the joy, spontaneity, and warmth that flows from deep roots". Buchman’s Art of Jazz features Dave DeWitt, Rob Fors, Lenny Balistreri and Benetsito Campoverde with Bill on piano. January 17 - 19, 2020: It's the 5th Annual Sarasota Seafood and Music Festival featuring family entertainment, local bands with a variety of live music, food vendors, arts and crafts vendors, kids activities, magicians, face painters and more. Live musical performances in genres from rock, jazz, R&B, big band, calypso and Carribean sounds. Performers on Friday night are:  RJ Howson (R&B, blues, rock), JP Soars & The Red Hots (soul, blues) and the Black Honkeys (rock, soul).  Performers on Saturday are:  The Whole Band featuring Callie Chappell (Americana, rock, variety), The Verge (classic rock 70’s to present), Twinkle & Rock Soul Radio (rock, soul) and the Billy Rice Band (country rock).  Sunday performers are:  Big Night Out (dance, rock, alternative), Kettle of Fish (rock, blues, reggae) and Fleetwood Max (Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band). January 18, 2020: The Beer & Burger Throw Down is coming to The Mall at University Town Center for an epic day of beer sampling, burger indulgence, family fun, and live music! The throw down features free beer samples from 12 p.m.- 3 p.m. featuring local craft brewers, and burgers from some of the best local restaurants and food trucks! January 18 - April 5, 2020: Sarasota's Bayfront Park has been the backdrop for Embracing Our Differences' colorful, larger-than-life canvases integrating powerful imagery and thought-provoking messages celebrating diversity. The scale and impact of this outdoor exhibition has continued to grow, attracting over two million visitors since its inception. January 19, 2019: It's St. Armands Circle's 10th annual Taste of St. Armands!  Proudly showcasing their outstanding St. Armands Circle restaurants as they share a sampling of some of their delicious recipes. From continental cuisine to seafood, Italian to Irish, Spanish to Cuban and a little taste of Floribian thrown in for good measure. Over 17 restaurants are participating in the beautiful setting of St. Armands Circle Park, along with noteworthy wineries and microbreweries or maybe you’d like to try this year’s Taste of St. Armands specialty drink. Musical sounds will fill the air and set the mood for an evening of fine food, libations and perhaps…a little dancing. There will be a Silent Auction and fundraising activities to benefit Satchels Last Resort Animal Shelter/Sanctuary and St. Armands Circle Association. January 20, 2020: Come out for Ringling by the Bay featuring live music and dancing with Big Night Out on the Bolger Campiello. January 20, 2020: The Venice Concert Band performs its Winter Concert, ““Carousel of Music”  Hop of the carousel as the Venice Concert Band takes you around the world with music from many different countries!  You will visit Cuba, England, Finland, and other countries on this musical tour. January 23 - 27, 2020: It's Forks and Corks for Foodies and Wine Connoisseurs with winemaker events and upscale dinners to casual tasting and sampling events. The Grand Tasting, January 26, annually takes place at the Ringling Museum Courtyard and sells out fast each year. Various dates, events, costs, times and locations. Enjoy!

January 24, 2020: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with Mary Rademacher with Eddie Tobin. Wintering in Florida from Michigan, Mary has become a favorite with the Jazz at 2 audience.  She was the Michigan Jazz Society 2006 Musician of the Year and performs in festivals, concert and on stage.  She is a true entertainer in every sense, weaving humor, dance and charm to create a warm rapport her audience. She is joined by another Sarasota favorite, Eddie Tobin on piano and others. The festival will continue to be a tribute to the extraordinary life of artist Rex A. Begaye, its founder. January 25, 2020: Check out S.A.F.E. Day, a FREE event that will feature many local safety and safety education oriented organizations and individuals. Among others, Sarasota fire Department, Sarasota Police Department, Health Department and CPC will be participating. For those who are more "hands on" there will be many interactive vendors and courses during the event. This event is perfect for adults as well as children.There will be an extensive KidZone to keep the little ones occupied that will include Rock Climbing, Stealth Laser Tag, Inflatables, and Bungee Trampolines, as well as face painting, and other activities. S.A.F.E. Day will also feature many local food trucks and other food vendors. Free giveaways, bicycle rodeo, rides and games for kids, meet a rescue dog, climb in a firetruck, check out a police boat and much more. Proceeds go to projects to help children get to school safely. January 25, 2020: Aarrgg! If you don't mind a short drive the downtown streets of Tampa host the Annual Gasparilla Festival from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. An expanded Pirate Fest in 2020 will feature stages along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa. The Gasparilla Parade Of Pirates is from 2 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. and begins at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard. It continues along Bayshore Boulevard to Brorein Street, turns east on Brorein Street, then north on Ashley Drive. The parade ends at Cass Street & Ashley Drive. The Pirate Fest will feature stages along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa with live entertainment, pre and post parade, in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park (Ashley and Twiggs), MacDill Park (Ashley and Whiting), The Sail Pavilion at the Tampa Convention Center, and Fergs Tampa (Jefferson and Channelside Drive). Free and open to the public.

January 25 - 26, 2020: Check out the 17th annual St. Armand's Circle’s Art Festival for fun and creativity at new levels. Usually held on the last weekend in January on St. Armand’s Circle in Circle Park, there are over 200 artists and craftsmen displaying their works from across the globe in a prestigious show encompassing life-sized sculpture, fine jewelry, exquisite works of art and hand-crafted apparel and decor. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Free. January 26, 2020: The State College of Florida Foundation (SCFF) will host the 18th annual Sundays at Neel entertainment series through  March 22, 2020. The series continues with: Bill and the Belles - This Tennessee-based string band puts a modern spin on vintage roots music, presenting a spirited sound somewhere between old-time country and vaudeville. January 26 - 27, 2019: Billed as the Sarasolo Festival, this 2 weekend event will feature 16 local and international solo performers featuring a variety of performances from improv to musical, story telling to dance, plays, cabaret, stand up and more featuring a selection of some of our best local performers. January 27, 2020: Check out the Jazz Club of Sarasota Monday Night Jazz at the Florida Studio Theatre Cabaret Series with Dan Miller/Lou Del Gatto Quartet. Jazz trumpeter Dan Miller spent 11 years as a member of Harry Connick Jr. Orchestra. Dan also toured internationally and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Tom Jones and Woody Herman. Saxophonist Lew Del Gatto was a member of Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Band and played 25 years with the Saturday Night Live Orchestra. Lew has performed with orchestras backing Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli, Tony Bennett and many more. Members $35; non members $39. Full bar and dinner available, doors open 6:30 for dinner. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Florida Studio Theatre's John C. Court Cabaret, First St and Cocoanut Ave, Sarasota. January 31, 2020: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with Danny Sinoff Music. Enjoy the music of the great composers of the American Songbook and some jazz favorites with the Danny Sinoff Trio. Sinoff, on piano and vocals, lists his influences as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller. His vocal influences are Harry Connick, Jr, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra. Patricia Dean is on drums and also vocals with Scott Smith on bass. January 31, 2020: The evening before The 65th Annual Highland Games is Ceilidh,” a traditional Celtic social gathering, which usually involves playing music, dancing and food! Clover's Revenge will be the entertainment for the evening. The tickets are $10.00 and they include dinner, dessert and beverage. There will be games, raffles, dancing, and music. January 31 - February 3, 2019: Venice Airport will once again host The Wings of Freedom Tour. On display and available for walk through tours will be the B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-25 Liberator and TF-51D Mustang. Walk through tours are $15 adults, $5 for 12 and under. WWII vets get into the ground tours free. Walk through tour times are: Thurs: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Fri - Sun: 9 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Flight Experiences take place before and after tours.
