Beginning on Wednesday March 18, 2020 the City of Sarasota will be closing down the Arlington Park and Aquatic Complex, Bobby Jones Golf Club, Lido Beach Pool, Payne Park Skate Park, Payne Park Tennis Center and the Robert L. Taylor Community Center through at least the end of the month.

March 1, 2020: Enjoy the 31st Annual Lido Tides Arts & Crafts Show in the open air along the beach in front of the Lido Beach Pavilion. Featuring the creations of talented artists and crafts people from all over. Lots of creativity on display and for purchase from spectacular paintings, one-of-a-kind jewels, and photography to ceramics, and much more. No matter what you're looking for, you'll be sure to find it among the various array of artists and crafters participating in this arts and craft festival. March 1, 2020: Check out the Venice Home Show for everything under the sun having to do with your home. Landscapers, builders, contractors, windows, kitchens, baths, solar, garden displays, outdoor furniture, closets, pools and spas, flooring, carpeting, paving, decks, security systems and more will be featured. March 1, 2020: It's the 7th Annual Fairy and Gnome House Festival at Historic Spanish Point! You and your family are invited to connect directly with the environment and express your creativity and explore the magic of nature! This enchanting family experience is held in the gardens of Historic Spanish Point. Visitors will discover whimsical fairy and gnome houses and experience family-friendly activities in  four Elemental Lands: earth, Air, Fire and Water. March 1, 2020 : Have a craft brew at the 2nd Annual SRQ Craft Beer Festival featuring breweries, vendors and activities.  There will be food trucks, live entertainment and a pop-up boutique shopping area as well as activities for the kids.Tickets are $20 to enter and that gets you free samples from Gold Coast Eagle and all the local breweries and entry into raffles for gift cards to local businesses. March 1, 2020: It's the last day of the DeSoto Food & Music Festival, a 3 day event with food, music, arts & crafts plus family fun. There will be local  artisans, vendors, a Kid's Zone and more. Among the bands performing will be The Georgia Satellites, Rebel Heart, and John Michael Montgomery. Admission: $10. March 1, 2020: Enjoy Sarasota's own Ski-A-Rees Water Ski Team and their Sunday afternoon show at 2 p.m. at Ski-A-Ree Stadium. This free show takes place at 1602 Ken Thompson Parkway (near/behind Mote Marine Aquarium on the water.) 2 p.m. 388-1666.

March 1, 2020: Ladies & Gentleman, Boys & Girls....It's Circus Sarasota celebrating 23 years of Big Top Performances. Previous headliners have included comic daredevil, Sarasota's own international star, Bello Nock and Sarasota's high wire artist, Nik Wallenda. The all new winter production features 33 performances under the Red and White Big Top at various times, dates and ticket prices. Every year features a new cast in an intimate one-ring European style Big Top. This year’s show features incredible artistry on the flag pole and single trapeze, fast paced Alanian riders on horseback, hand-to-hand acrobatics, juggling and much more! March 1, 2020: Check out North Port's San Pedro Community Festival where there will be live music, carnival rides, festival food, a market place and a beer and wine tent. Free admission. Sun: 12 p.m. - 7 p.m. San Pedro Catholic Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port, FL.

March 1 - April 5, 2020: Sarasota's Bayfront Park has been the backdrop for Embracing Our Differences' colorful, larger-than-life canvases integrating powerful imagery and thought-provoking messages celebrating diversity. The scale and impact of this outdoor exhibition has continued to grow, attracting over two million visitors since its inception. (Park entrance is located at the corner of Ringling Boulevard and Bayfront Drive/US Route 41). For more information about Embracing Our Differences, call 941-404-5710.

March 2, 2020: Come out for Ringling by the Bay featuring live music and dancing with Paisley Craze on the Bolger Campiello. Food and drinks available for purchase. 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Admission: $5 - $15. Tickets may be purchased in the Visitors Pavilion on the day of the event. Limited seating is available. March 2, 2020: Check out the Jazz Club of Sarasota Monday Night Jazz at the Florida Studio Theatre Cabaret Series with Marty Morell's Latin Jazz Ensemble. Marty Morell (drums, percussion, vibes, piano, producer) was a member of the Bill Evans Trio for seven years. He was the drummer with the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra from 2006-12. The members of the M&M Latin Jazz Ensemble includes Morell, Alejandro Arenas, Mark Feinman, Michiko Ohta Morell, John O'Leary and Jeff Rupert.  Members $35; non members $39. Full bar and dinner available, doors open 6:30 for dinner. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Florida Studio Theatre's John C. Court Cabaret, First St and Cocoanut Ave, Sarasota. March 3, 2020: The Movies in the Park series continues on Anna Maria Island with the screening of Short Circuit. The 1986 Sci-Fi Film stars Ally Sheedy & Steve Guttenberg. Bring chairs and blankets to sit on. Free. 6:30 p.m. City Pier, Pine Avenue and North Bay Blvd., Anna Maria, FL.

March 3 - 4, 2020: It's a free concert with live music on Tuesday with the Happy Time Band and Wednesday with the Gentlemen of Jazz. Enjoy the tunes from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. These free concerts take place in Centennial Park's Gazebo in downtown Venice, FL.

March 5, 2020: Enjoy the Tunes, Trucks, and Treasures at Phillippi Estate Park (formerly the Brown Bag Concert Series) now with food trucks and arts and crafts vendors every Thursday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. with live music from noon - 1 p.m. through March 26. Bring your lunch and a chair or blanket and enjoy a wide variety of musical performances. Free admission and Free parking. March 5, 2020: It's another in the block party series of Music on May Lane. Featuring the Big Night Out band along with Latin dancers, food vendors and drink specials, it takes place in Sarasota's Rosemary District. Free admission. 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. 700 Cocoanut Avenue at Cityside, Sarasota, FL.

March 5, 2020: Get groovin' in the courtyard at Ringling Underground where you can enjoy live music in the Museum of Art Courtyard. An eclectic mix of local and regional live music is featured in the series. Plus check out up and coming artists with select galleries open until 11 p.m. 8 p.m. - 11 p.m.  Admission: $15. March 6, 2020: Get your toes tapping at "Jazz at Two" with Skip Conkling’s “Dixie Mix”. Skip’s Dixie Mix plays some of your favorite Dixieland tunes with that New Orleans swing, jazz standards and music from  the American songbook.  You will hear some of your favorite toe-tapping tunes with that great New Orleans sound. March 6, 2020: It's the first Friday of the month so that means Music on Main at Lakewood Ranch from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m with The Whiskey Blind band! Beer, wine and food sales. Check out the fountain area for a balloon twister, face painting, and fun. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. March 6, 2020: Check out Cat Depot's "Whiskers & Waves" Gala which will be held at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium where guests will enjoy a magical evening "under the sea" while supporting hundreds of needy cats in the Sarasota area. March 6 - May 31, 2020: The Sarasota Chalk Festival opens its "3-D Illusion Museum," where you can walk in and become part of the artwork by stepping into the illusion! March 6 - 7, 2020:The Venice Area Quilter's Guild presents it's 2020 Quilt Show. Dedicated to the accomplishments of women during the past 100 years, their 2020 will be spectacular Quilt Show. March 7, 2020: It's the 11th Annual Shark's Tooth 10K run. It starts at the Venice Airport Festival Grounds. March 7, 2020: Take a short ride to the Parrish Heritage Days Parade and Festival, part of the Manatee Heritage days series of events. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. on 121st Avenue. The gates open at 11 a.m. at the Florida Railroad Museum with family friendly fun, a chili cook-off and tastiing, kids activities, live music, food and drink vendors and more. 10:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. $8 in advance $10 at the gate. March 7, 2020: The 9th Annual Irish Celtic Festival & Lucky Dog Parade that  takes place at Greenbrook Adventure Park off SR70 in Lakewood Ranch. With entertainment stages, the Lucky Dog Parade, traditional food, a pot 'o gold scavenger hunt, face painting, Dancers, Bands, Guys can enter the very popular ‘BEST LEGS IN A KILT’ Contest, and more. Judging and awards will be given for dogs that are Most Irish, Cutest, and Dog/Owner look alike. Also as part of this year's fest they will continue the Relay Race. March 7, 2020: The SFF Cinematheque is showing the 1954 Best Picture Oscar-winning romantic drama "From Here to Eternity" with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. They make waves in this landmark blockbuster about raging passions and stormy personal dramas on a Hawaiian military base in the lead-up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, and Donna Reed costar as the lovers and reluctant fighters whose romantic and moral crises are soon to be swept up in the tide of history. March 7 - 8, 2020: It's the 19th Annual Downtown Venice Art Classic which brings together longtime favorites and newer names in the contemporary art scene. March 7 - 8, 2020: You're invited to enjoy the Berry Fest from the same people that bring you the annual Pumpkin Fest. This family friendly event will feature craft booths, face painting, a rock wall, bounce house, mini train rides, food, an Easter egg hunt (2 p.m. every Saturday), Pie-eating contest (every Sunday at 2 p.m.) and spring baby animals. March 7 - 8, 2020: The 32nd annual Holmes Beach Spring Fest Fine Arts & Crafts Fest on Anna Maria Island. Nearly 80 juried Fine arts and fine craft sexhibitors, this event will also include children's young at art exhibit and art activities. March 7 - 8, 2020: Check out the 20th Annual Art in the Park Exhibition & Sale which features the work of over 30 artists, many showing nationally and award winning, under the canopy at the University Park Country Club. The public is welcome to this juried show and sale of fine art, from paintings and photography to sculpture. March 8, 2020: Event Cancelled. The United Daughters of the Confederacy are cancelling the event as a precaution to the coronavirus (COVID-19). A gathering of a large crowd of visitors would not be in the best interest of the public’s health and safety. Therefore, the difficult decision was made to cancel the event. The cancellation of the Spring Open House does not affect the parks regular operating hours. Event Cancelled.You're invited to a free open house! It's the Gamble Plantation Historic State Park Annual UDC 60th Annual Spring Open House. During the Mansion's 'free tours' see the many lifestyle demonstrations of  the era of the 1840’s - 1870’s. The ladies of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will be wearing costumes reminiscent of the era of the 1840’s through 1870’s to add that special touch of authenticity to the day. The Gamble Mansion will be open to the public with free tours  of the building. There will be music, crafts and fun for everyone. March 8, 2020: Canceled. The 40th Annual Sarasota Jazz Festival kicks off with the free Jazz in the Park concerts beginning at noon. The event features 3 bands; the Riverview HS Jazz Ensemble, the Don Levine Ensemble and the Debbie Keeton Jazz Quartet. Food trucks available for food and beverages. No coolers allowed. March 8 - 9,  The Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild of Sarasota will hold their 17th Biennial Quilt Show. (Next show is March 12 - 13, 2021) The show will include hundreds of beautiful quilts, more than 20 vendors, door prizes, basket raffles, mini quilt and block auctions, quilt appraisal services and our beautiful raffle quilt. The queen sized (88 x 88) quilt was made by a group of 20 Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild members.  The quilt features Kaffe Fassett fabric and includes hand applique and machine paper piecing.  The raffle drawing will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 9, 2019 during the quilt show.  Raffle quilt tickets can be purchased for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 during the show. Moving to March in 2020. January 12, 2019: The Annual Ringling Bridge Run, usually held each year in January was moved to March for 2020 in the hopes of being able to continue the run. Unfortunately due to complications, we assume, from the change over at the Sarasota YMCA in 2019, they are not able to hold the Bridge Run in 2020. Stay tuned for next year.

March 8 - 14, 2020: CANCELED. The Jazz Club of Sarasota marks its 40th anniversary with the 40th Sarasota Jazz Festival, its biggest ever. Ken Peplowski—"arguably the greatest living jazz clarinetist” (BBC2)—returns for his third year as music director for the mainstage concerts. The Manhattan Transfer will headline the milestone event. Other jazz stars include Dick Hyman, Clairdee, Houston Person, Charles McPherson, Russell Malone, Terell Stafford, and festival band La Lucha—Alejandro Arenas, Mark Feinman, and John O’Leary. The festival brings a mix of free and ticketed events. The festival’s mainstage concerts will be presented in the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, 801 North Tamiami Trail and several other concerts will be staged at several venues, each within a short walking distance of the Auditorium. In addition, several long-established festival events will be held in their traditional venues at Phillippi Estate Park, Burns Court Cinema, and night clubs in downtown Sarasota.

March 10 - 11, 2020: You're invited to visit the Powel Crosley Estate during a rare free open house. Tour the house which is on the National Register of Historic Places and was the winter home of Powel Crosley. Crosley Radios and other memorabilia will be on display throughout the house. March 10 - 11, 2020: It's a free concert with live music on Tuesday with the Happy Time Band and Wednesday with the Gentlemen of Jazz. Enjoy the tunes from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. These free concerts take place in Centennial Park's Gazebo in downtown Venice, FL.

March 11, 2020: Put on your Sunday finest and travel back in time to an old-fashioned tea party with Bertha Palmer. Mrs. Bertha Palmer (played by Kathryn Chesley) will be in attendance sharing stories about her life here in Sarasota and back in Chicago. March 27 - April 5, 2020: Postponed. It's the 22nd Annual Sarasota Film Festival, one of the year's biggest events. It's 10 days of movies, celebrities and parties when Hollywood comes to Sarasota! Hollywood Stars that appeared here in 2019 were Greg Kinnear, Blythe Danner, Anne Heche,and Tyne Daily. Hollywood Stars who made appearances in 2018 included actress Virginia Madsen and actor Steve Guttenberg, who received a career achievement award from the festival. The 2017 Film Festival included Diane Lane, Rory Kennedy, and Aisha Tyler. Actors Stanley Tucci, and Rosanna Arquette, who took part in the "In Conversation With" series, also attended the 2017 festival. On the 2016 appearance agenda were actresses and actors: Sophia Loren, Olympia Dukakis, George Hamilton, Mathew Modine, and Treat Williams. Making appearances in 2015 were actresses Cloris Leachman, Jane Seymour and Blythe Danner. Making an appearance at the 2013 Film Festival was actress Mariel Hemingway. The 2012 Feature actor and special guest was Frank Langella. 2011's special guest and honoree was the legendary Christopher Plummer, who received the "Cinema Master" Award. Also receiving an award in 2012 was Oscar Award winning actress Geena Davis.

March 28, 2020: The 4th Annual Suncoast Walk for Water brings a focus to the global water crisis. This year there are team challenges, three course lengths, live music, games, food, kids activities and more.The Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch is sponsoring the fundraiser for a safe water project in Peru. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m. A $15 donation is requested from walkers. Children under 8 walk for free. 8:30 a.m. - noon. March 28, 2020: It's the DeSoto Heritage Festival Bottle Boat Regatta taking place from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on the south west boat ramps of Palma Sola Causeway. Featured are handmade model boats of all kinds made out of plastic bottles. March 28, 2020: Canceled. Manatee Village Historical Park will host Cemetery Tours, guided walking tours of the 1850 Manatee Burying Grounds. Two guided tours will take place in the daylight of spring. Learn the cemetery’s history and landscape, personal stories of those buried, and the meaning of tombstone shapes and symbols. The 1850 Manatee Burying Grounds is the oldest public cemetery in Manatee County. It was the first burying ground for the Village of Manatee, the first established community between Tampa and Key West dating to 1842. The Burying Grounds were in use from 1850-1892 with a few family burials occurring up until the 1960s. Tours will take place at 11:00 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m. Each tour lasts approximately one hour. Appropriate clothing and footwear is encouraged. Tours take place outside with natural elements including uneven ground and exposure to sunlight. Changes due to weather will be decided 30-60 minutes before tour. In case of rain, the tour will take place in the 1887 Church with a presentation. $10 per person. Limited spaces, non-refundable. March 28 - 29, 2020: Canceled. Sarasota Bay plays host to the Sarasota Youth Sailing Club's 33rd annual SailFest Regatta. It's part of a nationwide event for sailors ages 8 - 21. This Junior Olympic event draws over 200 sailors and their families to the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and the surrounding areas for the weekend. It's a one-day offshore tournament for grouper with prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place plus a trophy for the biggest catch. Plus there's usually an after tournament barbeque and raffle for prizes. March 29, 2020: Canceled. SCF Hosts Free CarFit Checks for Senior Drivers. The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) and the South Bay Occupational Therapy Forum will host CarFit check-ups. Trained professionals take participants through a 12-point checklist with their vehicle, recommending minor adjustments to improve driving comfort such as ensuring adequate space from the steering wheel, proper seat belt use and properly adjusted head restraints. An occupational therapist will be on hand to provide information on maintaining and strengthening driving health. The event is free and open to senior drivers by appointment. Each appointment takes about 20 minutes.
