The July Sarasota Events Calendar has the best of the best fun free (or next to nothing) "happenings" in Sarasota, Florida and around the sun coast.

(Due to coronavirus many events are on hold or decisions have not been made yet as to whether the event will go on as scheduled, be canceled or postponed.  All dates, times and events are subject to change, cancellation or postponement by organizers due to coronavirus. July 3, 2020: Nathan Benderson Park’s annual July 3 tradition, NBP Fireworks On The Lake, returns with a social distancing twist. It’s the finale of WWSB ABC7’s Independence Day special, tentatively airing at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 4, 2020. The in-person fireworks celebration at the park will be a drive-in, social-distancing event. Fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. July 3 at the park. Ticketed fireworks viewing areas are on the park’s Regatta Island, in the Green Lot next to the SCAT station on North Cattlemen Road, and on the park’s south end. Vehicles will be spaced to allow for social distancing, so parking in each lot will be limited. Tickets will be sold beginning June 24, 2020. July 3, 2020: Canceled. Lakewood Ranch presents Music on Main the first Friday of each month from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m.! Live music, beer, wine and food available. Bring your chairs, but leave coolers at home. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a short leash. Overflow parking is available at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. Lakewood Ranch is off University Parkway east of I-75.

July 3, 2020: No games scheduled yet so no fireworks show for 2020. See their biggest fireworks show of their season after the Charlotte Stone Crabs game against the fire Frogs and before the game there will be a pregame Helicopter Candy Drop. Tickets $8 - $9. July 4, 2020: No games scheduled yet so no fireworks show for 2020. As All-American as it gets: Baseball and fireworks! Take in the Marauder's Baseball game along with Fireworks after the game at LECOM Field. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., game time at 5:30 p.m. against the Clearwater Threshers and a post-game fireworks show. The first 1,500 fans will receive free t-shirts. July 4, 2020: Have a Grand Old Time and Celebrate America’s Independence Day, The Fourth of July! The Sarasota Suncoast puts on as festive an occasion as anywhere else. During the long holiday weekend there are events and fireworks displays up and down the coast, from beach to shining beach! All fireworks displays start around dusk, of course, and all can be viewed by land as well as some by sea. (Please note: schedules may change and weather conditions may force cancellation of events.) Here's my list of free events and fireworks displays around the Sarasota Suncoast! All dates, times and events are subject to change, cancellation or postponement by organizers due to coronavirus.

July 4, 2020: July 4, 2020: Venice: Check out the 7th annual Myakka River Kayak Festival with kayaking, live music and craft beers. Kayak rentals will be offered by the hour. Receive a one-hour "bounce back" with your rental. Basically, it's buy an hour, get one free! Must be redeemed by July 31st. Raise your glass to $1 off all draft beers. Grilling out all day with gator burgers, brats, hot dogs, hamburgers & corn on the cob available in the spirit of the 4th. Live entertainment, too! Steve Arvey will be playing onstage from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please note that all social distancing and sanitation measures will be enforced. Tables will be spaced at least 6 feet apart, and live entertainment will play a minimum of 6 feet away from the nearest table. At this time, dancing is not permitted. Simply sit back, relax and enjoy the music and adhere to social distancing guidelines. July 4, 2020: Celebrate the Fourth of July with The Choral Artists of Sarasota as they present American Fanfare with rousing songs celebrating America including perennial favorites. A patriotic concert full of choral fireworks celebrating America, the American Dream - liberty and justice for all - forms the cornerstone of this annual performance. 4:00 p.m. The concert will be live streamed at 4 p.m. and posted on YouTube and their site for later viewing as well.

July 5, 2020:  Sarasota County is looking for volunteers for the 7th Annual Liberty Litter Cleanup. Volunteers will focuses on area beaches hit hardest by the July 4th celebrations. Cleanup efforts will take place from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. at Siesta Key, Lido Beach, South Lido Beach, Nokomis Beach, North Jetty Park, Venice Beach and Blind Pass Beach & Park. All volunteers should report to the Site Captain at their cleaning location. To volunteer and confirm locations call 941-861-5000. July 6, 2020: Canceled. The FST Improv Presents "When X Meets Y:" The American Revolution, a special in honor musical improv show of Independence Day. Inspired by one location and three random notes on the keyboard, the cast of FST Improv’s "When X Meets Y" will weave a story of love taking place during the American Revolution. In the style of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, the show follows a band of colonialists as they try to fight the British while falling in love at the same time. The exclusive performance takes place in FST’s Bowne’s Lab Theatre. Full menu and bar are available. Doors open one hour prior to the show. July 7 - 8, 2020: One of the Annual Summer Events in Sarasota: The Kids Summer Beach Runs are 1-mile beach runs held every Tuesday (through July 28) at Siesta Beach on Siesta Key near the pavilion, and every Wednesday (through July 29) at Brohard Beach (1600 Harbor Drive) next to the Venice Fishing Pier, near Fins at Sharky's, Venice. Participation ribbons awarded each week. This year, kids have the option of running at one of our county beaches or at an off-site location of their choice. Participants who run 4 times will earn an event shirt. (Pre-registration is required to be eligible for the shirt.) For more details or to register, call 941-861 (PARK) 7275. Registration at each location begins at 5:30 p.m. and the beach run starts promptly at 6:30 p.m. The runs are a popular summer event combining exercise and fun. Ages 1 - 17. July 10 - 12, 2020: Florida Studio Theatre will present an online improv festival the same weekend its annual Sarasota Improv Festival was slated to take place: Held completely online, this Festival features workshops, shows, and interviews with established improvisers from around the world, including Joe Bill (a founding member of Chicago’s Annoyance Theater), Craig Cackowski (Quartet, Orange Tuxedo), and Gael Perry (French improv troupe, La Carpe Haute). Shows and interviews can be accessed for free on the Sarasota Improv Festival’s Facebook page. Workshops will be conducted over Zoom and cost $30 each. July 11, 2020: It's the Team Navigation Challenge. This fun team event from Green Beret Fitness will take you all over Downtown Sarasota on a mission to hit the checkpoints, complete the challenges, and be the first team back to base. Your team will be issued with a list of checkpoints on the morning and you must plan the best route before setting off to complete the course. July 11 - August 8, 2020: Canceled. The Ringling Museum presents their Summer Circus Spectacular. It's presented in collaboration with The Circus Arts Conservatory of Sarasota. The Summer Circus Spectacular highlights some of the finest circus acts from around the world .Various show days and times. Tickets are $16 Adults/ $12 Children 12 and under. July 12 - 13, 2019: Canceled for 2020.Time to LOL! It's the 11th Annual Sarasota Improv Festival when laughter takes over the entire Florida Studio Theatre campus! This year’s Festival will bring together over 20 of the top improv troupes from across the nation and as far as Canada and the UK to Florida’s Gulf Coast for a weekend of spontaneous comedy to take risks, get raw, and get real on stage in a variety of improv formats. Headlining this year is Quartet, a group that knows how to shape these core elements into thrilling improvisation. In addition to Quartet, this year’s Festival will welcome two international improv groups: The Maydays from the United Kingdom and 2-Man No Show from Canada. This year marks the fifth consecutive year that FST will welcome artists from around the world to its Improv Festival.  Various ticket prices and packages. July 12 - 14, 2019: TBD for 2020. Get in on the hunt for the 6th Annual Sarasota Lionfish Derby sponsored by and based at Mote Marine Laboratory. Captain's meeting is July 12, Lionfish hunting derby is July 13 offshore from Collier to Escambia Counties. Weigh-in is July 14 at Mote Marie Laboratory and the public is invited. Derbies are a way to help divers harvest Lionfish, provide public education and opportunities to taste the delicious Lionfish for free. Cost to participate in the Derby is $120.00 per team (minimum 2 people per team, maximum 4 people). The public is invited to join Mote scientists and derby participants at the weigh-in for educational dissections and lionfish tastings on Sunday. July 17 - 18, 2020: Historic downtown Venice brings back Christmas in July. While basically a sales promotion, you can catch Santa and Mrs. Claus riding the trolley and visiting the shops and get some great deals. Enjoy an evening on the bay front and some free live music at the 18th annual summer music fest, "Friday Fest", at the Van Wezel with Rebel Heart, featuring some of today's most popular country songs, mixed with a healthy dose of hits from pop, rock, dance and the blues! The 5-piece band will put on a high-energy, powerful and melodic country rock act.  Bring your lawn chair or blanket, take in the music along with the beautiful Sarasota sunset and enjoy food from food trucks and drinks from local vendors. Outside food and drink is prohibited. On the riverfront, you can learn about our region's rich history of Red Bays, Bahamas and the early 1800's community that was known as Angola, near what is now Bradenton Park. Along with live Bahamian music there will also be wood carvers, basket weavers and food vendors selling Bahamian cuisine among others. Hosted by The Oak Tree Community Outreach, the festival is at Manatee Mineral Springs Park in Bradenton. Free admission. July 24 - 26, 2020: Celebrate the return of baseball with an action-packed series of events beginning on Friday, July 24th as Karla and John take the stage from 1 - 4 p.m. At 4:10 p.m. on Friday be sure to be at Cool Today Ballpark to watch the Atlanta Braves take on The New York Mets in the team's first regular season game of 2020. On Saturday, July 25 The Tams'll be playing all your favorite tunes you know and love. July 25 - 26, 2020: It's the 10th Annual Mystic Faire featuring everything metaphysical. Billed as the largest psychic fair in southwest Florida it will feature over 75 exhibitors and more than 25 psychics. Hear free lecturers and see psychics, healers and vendors of many kinds. See Santa and his sleigh at 6 p.m. for pictures with you and your kids. There will be a “Lotto Board” Raffle with Tickets going on sale at the Drift In on Bridge Street. Celebrate their 48th Anniversary of the Triple Crown Dance Sport Event, the first and longest running DanceSport series in the world.
